The Snare Of The Fowler Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCBCDD EFEFGG HIHIJJ KLKLMM NONOPP

' Some Cupid kills with arrows some with traps 'A
-
I WRITE for those of whom I know a fewB
Young pretty and a little bit flirtatiousC
Who would do even more harm if they knewB
The science of the Art of being GraciousC
Science in any game we know will tellD
And those who play this ought to play it wellD
-
First do not doubt that rivals please a manE
Not too successful ones 'tis understoodF
They flatter him as nothing you do canE
And give him certainty his taste is goodF
And though at times a little in his wayG
They make him find the house he haunts more gayG
-
Do not abuse the girls he likes 'tis farH
From wise for he will only think you spitefulI
Praise them and show how ludicrous they areH
And ten to one he'll find the joke delightfulI
From which I draw this never failing ruleJ
Love lives through slander but not ridiculeJ
-
Do not appear incredulous of vowsK
As is the way of self distrusting youthL
A little doubt civility allowsK
But not too long should you impugn their truthL
In short if you would give true satisfactionM
Express belief in words and doubt in actionM
-
Should the day come when he is not the sameN
Do not reproach and treat him like a sinnerO
The fault is yours Find out the lady's nameN
And be a friend and ask them both to dinnerO
And I have heard the game not always endsP
When two old lovers change to two good friendsP
