-
-
The young men said to their motherC
Hear us O dearest and bestD
Time cannot cool or smotherC
The love of you in our breastD
Here is your place and no otherC
Come home and restD
-
And the mother's heart was gratefulE
For the love of her cherished onesF
And her labor bitter and hatefulE
She left at the word of her sonsF
Till she heard far off the fatefulE
Voices of gunsF
-
Their love did more enslave herC
They did not understandG
That none could guard or save herC
When war was on the landG
But herself and God who gave herC
Heart and mind and handG
