'There sinks the nebulous star we call the SunA
If that hypothesis of theirs be sound'B
Said Ida 'let us down and rest ' and weC
Down from the lean and wrinkled precipicesD
By every coppice feathered chasm and cleftB
Dropt through the ambrosial gloom to where belowE
No bigger than a glow worm shone the tentB
Lamp lit from the inner Once she leaned on meC
Descending once or twice she lent her handB
And blissful palpitations in the bloodB
Stirring a sudden transport rose and fellF
-
But when we planted level feet and diptB
Beneath the satin dome and entered inG
There leaning deep in broidered down we sankH
Our elbows on a tripod in the midstB
A fragrant flame rose and before us glowedB
Fruit blossom viand amber wine and goldB
-
Then she 'Let some one sing to us lightlier moveI
The minutes fledged with music ' and a maidB
Of those beside her smote her harp and sangJ
-
-
'Tears idle tears I know not what they meanK
Tears from the depth of some divine despairL
Rise in the heart and gather to the eyesD
In looking on the happy Autumn fieldsD
And thinking of the days that are no moreM
-
'Fresh as the first beam glittering on a sailN
That brings our friends up from the underworldB
Sad as the last which reddens over oneA
That sinks with all we love below the vergeO
So sad so fresh the days that are no moreM
-
'Ah sad and strange as in dark summer dawnsD
The earliest pipe of half awakened birdsD
To dying ears when unto dying eyesD
The casement slowly grows a glimmering squareL
So sad so strange the days that are no moreM
-
'Dear as remembered kisses after deathP
And sweet as those by hopeless fancy feignedB
On lips that are for others deep as loveQ
Deep as first love and wild with all regretB
O Death in Life the days that are no more '-
-
-
She ended with such passion that the tearL
She sang of shook and fell an erring pearlR
Lost in her bosom but with some disdainS
Answered the Princess 'If indeed there hauntB
About the mouldered lodges of the PastB
So sweet a voice and vague fatal to menT
Well needs it we should cram our ears with woolU
And so pace by but thine are fancies hatchedB
In silken folded idleness nor is itB
Wiser to weep a true occasion lostB
But trim our sails and let old bygones beC
While down the streams that float us each and allV
To the issue goes like glittering bergs of iceD
Throne after throne and molten on the wasteB
Becomes a cloud for all things serve their timeW
Toward that great year of equal mights and rightsD
Nor would I fight with iron laws in the endB
Found golden let the past be past let beC
Their cancelled Babels though the rough kex breakX
The starred mosaic and the beard blown goatB
Hang on the shaft and the wild figtree splitB
Their monstrous idols care not while we hearY
A trumpet in the distance pealing newsD
Of better and Hope a poising eagle burnsD
Above the unrisen morrow ' then to meC
'Know you no song of your own land ' she saidB
'Not such as moans about the retrospectB
But deals with the other distance and the huesD
Of promise not a death's head at the wine '-
-
Then I remembered one myself had madeB
What time I watched the swallow winging southZ
From mine own land part made long since and partB
Now while I sang and maidenlike as farA2
As I could ape their treble did I singB2
-
-
'O Swallow Swallow flying flying SouthZ
Fly to her and fall upon her gilded eavesD
And tell her tell her what I tell to theeC
-
'O tell her Swallow thou that knowest eachC2
That bright and fierce and fickle is the SouthZ
And dark and true and tender is the NorthD2
-
'O Swallow Swallow if I could follow and lightB
Upon her lattice I would pipe and trillE2
And cheep and twitter twenty million lovesD
-
'O were I thou that she might take me inG
And lay me on her bosom and her heartB
Would rock the snowy cradle till I diedB
-
'Why lingereth she to clothe her heart with loveQ
Delaying as the tender ash delaysD
To clothe herself when all the woods are greenK
-
'O tell her Swallow that thy brood is flownF2
Say to her I do but wanton in the SouthZ
But in the North long since my nest is madeB
-
'O tell her brief is life but love is longG2
And brief the sun of summer in the NorthD2
And brief the moon of beauty in the SouthZ
-
'O Swallow flying from the golden woodsD
Fly to her and pipe and woo her and make her mineH2
And tell her tell her that I follow thee '-
-
-
I ceased and all the ladies each at eachC2
Like the Ithacensian suitors in old timeW
Stared with great eyes and laughed with alien lipsD
And knew not what they meant for still my voiceD
Rang false but smiling 'Not for thee ' she saidB
O Bulbul any rose of GulistanH2
Shall burst her veil marsh divers rather maidB
Shall croak thee sister or the meadow crakeG2
Grate her harsh kindred in the grass and thisD
A mere love poem O for such my friendB
We hold them slight they mind us of the timeW
When we made bricks in Egypt Knaves are menH2
That lute and flute fantastic tendernessD
And dress the victim to the offering upI2
And paint the gates of Hell with ParadiseD
And play the slave to gain the tyrannyH2
Poor soul I had a maid of honour onceD
She wept her true eyes blind for such a oneH2
A rogue of canzonets and serenadesD
I loved her Peace be with her She is deadB
So they blaspheme the muse But great is songG2
Used to great ends ourself have often triedB
Valkyrian hymns or into rhythm have dashedB
The passion of the prophetess for songG2
Is duer unto freedom force and growthJ2
Of spirit than to junketing and loveQ
Love is it Would this same mock love and thisD
Mock Hymen were laid up like winter batsD
Till all men grew to rate us at our worthK2
Not vassals to be beat nor pretty babesD
To be dandled no but living wills and spheredB
Whole in ourselves and owed to none EnoughL2
But now to leaven play with profit youM2
Know you no song the true growth of your soilN2
That gives the manners of your country women '-
-
She spoke and turned her sumptuous head with eyesD
Of shining expectation fixt on mineH2
Then while I dragged my brains for such a songG2
Cyril with whom the bell mouthed glass had wroughtB
Or mastered by the sense of sport beganH2
To troll a careless careless tavern catchO2
Of Moll and Meg and strange experiencesD
Unmeet for ladies Florian nodded at himP2
I frowning Psyche flushed and wanned and shookG2
The lilylike Melissa drooped her browsD
'Forbear ' the Princess cried 'Forbear Sir' IQ2
And heated through and through with wrath and loveQ
I smote him on the breast he started upI2
There rose a shriek as of a city sackedB
Melissa clamoured 'Flee the death ' 'To horse'D
Said Ida 'home to horse ' and fled as fliesD
A troop of snowy doves athwart the duskG2
When some one batters at the dovecote doorsD
Disorderly the women Alone I stoodB
With Florian cursing Cyril vext at heartB
In the pavilion there like parting hopesD
I heard them passing from me hoof by hoofR2
And every hoof a knell to my desiresD
Clanged on the bridge and then another shriekG2
'The Head the Head the Princess O the Head '-
For blind with rage she missed the plank and rolledB
In the river Out I sprang from glow to gloomS2
There whirled her white robe like a blossomed branchT2
Rapt to the horrible fall a glance I gaveU2
No more but woman vested as I wasD
Plunged and the flood drew yet I caught her thenH2
Oaring one arm and bearing in my leftB
The weight of all the hopes of half the worldB
Strove to buffet to land in vain A treeH2
Was half disrooted from his place and stoopedB
To wrench his dark locks in the gurgling waveU2
Mid channel Right on this we drove and caughtB
And grasping down the boughs I gained the shoreM
