I come from haunts of coot and hernA
I make a sudden sallyB
And sparkle out among the fernA
To bicker down a valleyB
-
By thirty hills I hurry downC
Or slip between the ridgesD
By twenty thorpes a little townC
And half a hundred bridgesD
-
Till last by Philip's farm I flowE
To join the brimming riverF
For men may come and men may goE
But I go on for everF
-
I chatter over stony waysG
In little sharps and treblesG
I bubble into eddying baysG
I babble on the pebblesG
-
With many a curve my banks I fretH
By many a field and fallowE
And many a fairy foreland setH
With willow weed and mallowE
-
I chatter chatter as I flowE
To join the brimming riverF
For men may come and men may goE
But I go on for everF
-
I wind about and in and outI
With here a blossom sailingJ
And here and there a lusty troutI
And here and there a graylingJ
-
And here and there a foamy flakeK
Upon me as I travelL
With many a silvery waterbreakK
Above the golden gravelL
-
And draw them all along and flowE
To join the brimming riverF
For men may come and men may goE
But I go on for everF
-
I steal by lawns and grassy plotsG
I slide by hazel coversG
I move the sweet forget me notsG
That grow for happy loversG
-
I slip I slide I gloom I glanceG
Among my skimming swallowsG
I make the netted sunbeam danceG
Against my sandy shallowsG
-
I murmur under moon and starsG
In brambly wildernessesG
I linger by my shingly barsG
I loiter round my cressesG
-
And out again I curve and flowE
To join the brimming riverF
For men may come and men may goE
But I go on for everF
