Where Autumn runnels fret and foamA
Past banks of amber fernB
Since track was none I chanced to roamA
Along a Border burnB
-
The rain was gone the winds were furledC
No cloud was in the skyD
So that there seemed in all the worldC
Only the stream and ID
-
At length upon a grey green stoneE
I sate me down to dreamF
Till with its flow familiar grownE
I thus addressed the streamF
-
Dear Border Burn that had your birthG
Where hills stand bright and highD
Whose lowlier parent is the earthG
Whose loftier the skyD
-
Half heavenly therefore in your sourceH
Withal to man akinI
Betraying by your wayward courseH
Your mingled originJ
-
Why in a scene so fair as thisK
Not linger while you mayL
And lengthen out unchided blissK
In childlike holidayL
-
Encircled here by native hillsM
And fringed by wilding flowersN
With all your playmate sister rillsN
To wile away the hoursN
-
Past glowing heather silvery sedgeO
You hurry on and onP
Rush at the rock then leap the ledgeO
All eager to be goneQ
-
For you the mavis thrills the brakeR
For you the laverocks soarS
And even snow and sleet but makeR
You dance and sing the moreS
-
The water ouzels dip and shootC
Amid your flashing sprayL
Where flapping heron skimming cootC
Forage and pair and playL
-
The forest doe forsakes the hillT
Companioned by her fawnQ
In your clear pools to drink her fillT
As darkness yields to dawnQ
-
When meadows gleam with burnished goldC
Some tender bosomed maidC
Comes down from far off manse or foldC
And under birchen shadeC
-
Trembles to tale of manhood braveU
Or courtship long and sweetC
And sometimes in your freshening waveU
Will dip her dainty feetC
-
And deaf to sound from neighbouring glenV
Of summer cooing dovesN
Hear but your voice and deem it thenV
The voice of him she lovesN
-
And be the season keen or kindC
Frowning or fair the skyD
The poet with his musing mindC
Hither will ofttimes hieW
-
And listening lost among the fernB
To murmur sweet or strongX
Now not less strong than sweet doth learnB
To modulate his songX
-
And thus attuned to every stringY
Nature is skilled to strikeZ
Mellows the thoughts that comfort bringY
To glad and sad alikeZ
-
Friends fond and faithful such as theseN
Why do you long to leaveA2
For scenes that since untried can pleaseN
But lure you to deceiveA2
-
The forward quest the feverish chaseN
Foul city venal martC
Will cloud the fairness of your faceN
And desecrate your heartC
-
Here betwixt fern and flower you stillT
Can wind and wander freeB2
There granite banks will curb your willT
And chain your liberty ''-
-
I ceased But though I paused to learnB
No answer seemed to comeC2
And save an onward bickering burnB
All now again was dumbC2
-
It rolled and rippled swept and swirledC
No other sound was nighD
So that there seemed in all the worldC
Only the stream and ID
-
But like the babbled words that makeR
The mother's heart rejoiceN
Slowly the stream's soul seemed to wakeR
And find a human voiceN
-
Till waxing stronger and more clearD2
Still as it rushed alongX
Its answer sounded on mine earE2
Lucid as poet's songX
-
Here was I born here nursed and bredC
From here shall carry stillT
Something of moor and bracken bedC
Something of heath and hillT
-
Yet like to you who suckled firstC
Where becks through boulders windC
In youth from loving bondage burstC
And left your home behindC
-
To seek the far off larger lifeF2
Where mind with mind contendsN
On peaceful fields in generous strifeF2
To further loftier endsN
-
So do I quit my native hillsN
Red rowan hawthorn pearledC
My brother braes my sister rillsN
To find a wider worldC
-
And with a half reluctant heartC
Leave dingle dale and woodC
To bear a meek but manly partC
In burdened brotherhoodC
-
Why should I selfishly remainG2
A simple mountain streamF
Or shrink because some earthy stainG2
Cloudeth each heavenly dreamF
-
Chide me not then nor seek to stayC
The current of my soulH2
Though conflict check or chafe my wayC
The Ocean is my goalH2
-
Where I from sea to sea shall rideC
Shall roll from shore to shoreS
And with the Universal TideC
Be one for evermoreS
-
Yet by Heaven's Law of Love allowedC
Revolving to returnB
Wafted by wind and borne on cloudC
Still be a Border Burn ''-
