The Treasury Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAACCADEEDDFFGHEEH HIIHAJJAAAAA

THE strange intelligence then reached my earsA
That in the land of Egypt lived a manB
Who wise of wit subjected to his scanB
The dark occurrences of uncome yearsA
He judged the stars and by the moving spheresA
And aspects of the heavens unveiled the dimC
Face of futurity which then to himC
Appeared as clear to us the past appearsA
A yearning towards this sage inspired my penD
And tongue that instant with humilityE
Descending from my height of majestyE
Such mastery has a strong desire o'er menD
My earnest prayers I wrote I sent with tenD
My noblest envoys loaded each apartF
With gold and silver which with all my heartF
I offered him but the request was vainG
With much politeness the wise man repliedH
quot You sire are a great king and I should beE
Most glad to serve you but in such a feeE
Of gold and silver gems I take no sort of prideH
Deign then yourself to use them I abideH
Content in more abundant wealth and mayI
Your treasures profit you in every wayI
That I can wish your servant quot I compliedH
But sent the stateliest of my argosiesA
Which reached and from the Alexandrian portJ
Brought safe this cunning master to my courtJ
Who greeted me with all kind courtesiesA
I knowing well his great abilitiesA
And learning in the movement of the spheresA
Have highly honored him these many yearsA
For honor is the birthright of the wiseA
