Dedicated to General J C F FullerA
-
Velvet soft the night star glowedB
Over the untrodden roadB
Through the giant glades of yewC
Where its ray fell light as dewC
Lighting up the shimmering veilD
Maiden pure and aery frailD
That the spiders wove to hideE
Blushes of the sylvan brideE
Earth that trembled with delightF
At the male caress of NightF
-
Velvet soft the wizard trodG
To the Sabbath of his GodG
With his naked feet he madeH
Starry blossoms in the gladeH
Softly softly as he wentI
To the sombre sacramentJ
Stealthy stepping to the trystK
In his gown of amethystK
-
Earlier yet his soul had comeL
To the Hill of MartyrdomL
Where the charred and crooked stakeM
Like a black envenomed snakeM
By the hangman's hands is thrustN
Through the wet and writhing dustN
Never black and never driedE
Heart's blood of a suicideE
-
He had plucked the hazel rodG
From the rude and goatish godG
Even as the curved moon's waning rayO
Stolen from the King of DayO
He had learnt the elvish signP
Given the Token of the NineP
Once to rave and once to revelQ
Once to bow before the devilQ
Once to swing the thuribleQ
Once to kiss the goat of hellQ
Once to dance the aspen springR
Once to croak and once to singR
Once to oil the savoury thighsS
Of the witch with sea green eyesS
With the unguents magicalQ
Oh the honey and the gallQ
Of that black enchanter's lipsT
As he croons to the eclipseT
Mingling that most puissant spellQ
Of the giant gods of hellQ
With the four ingredientsU
Of the evil elementsU
Ambergris from golden sparV
Musk of ox from Mongol jarV
Civet from a box of jadeH
Mixed with fat of many a maidH
Slain by the inchauntments coldW
Of the witches wild and oldW
-
He had crucified a toadB
In the basilisk abodeB
Muttering the Runes averseX
Mad with many a mocking curseX
-
He had traced the serpent sigilQ
In his ghastly virgin vigilQ
Sursum cor the elfin hillQ
Where the wind blows deadly chillQ
From the world that wails beneathY
Death's black throat and lipless teethY
There he had stood his bosom bareZ
Tracing Life upon the AirZ
With the crook and with the flailQ
Lashing forward on the galeQ
Till its blade that waverethY
Like the flickering of DeathY
Sank before his subtle fenceA2
To the starless sea of senseA2
-
Now at last the man is comeL
Haply to his halidomL
Surely as he waves his rodG
In a circle on the sodG
Springs the emerald chaste and cleanB2
From the duller paler greenB2
Surely in the circle millionsC2
Of immaculate pavilionsC2
Flash upon the trembling turfD2
Like the sea stars in the surfD2
Millions of bejewelled tentsE2
For the warrior sacramentsU
Vaster vaster vaster vasterZ
Grows the stature of the masterZ
All the ringed encampment viesS
With the infinite galaxiesF2
In the midst a cubic stoneG2
With the Devil set thereonH2
Hath a lamb's virginal throatI2
Hath the body of a stoatI2
Hath the buttocks of a goatI2
Hath the sanguine face and rodI2
Of a goddess and a godI2
-
Spell by spell and pace by paceJ2
Mystic flashes swing and traceJ2
Velvet soft the sigils steppedI2
By the silver starred adeptI2
Back and front and to and froZ
Soul and body sway and flowZ
In vertiginous caressesK2
To imponderable recessesL2
Till at last the spell is wovenM2
And the faery veil is clovenM2
That was Sequence Space and StressN2
Of the soul sick consciousnessO2
-
'Give thy body to the beastsP2
Give thy spirit to the priestsP2
Break in twain the hazel rodI2
On the virgin lips of GodI2
Tear the Rosy Cross asunderZ
Shatter the black bolt of thunderZ
Suck the swart ensanguine kissQ2
Of the resolute abyss '-
Wonder weft the wizard heardI2
This intolerable wordI2
Smote the blasting hazel rodI2
On the scarlet lips of GodI2
Trampled Cross and rosy coreZ
Brake the thunder tool of ThorZ
Meek and holy acolyteI2
Of the priestly hells of spiteI2
Sleek and shameless catamiteI2
Of the beasts that prowl the nightI2
-
Like a star that streams from heavenM2
Through the virgin airs light rivenM2
From the lift there shot and fellQ
An admirable miracleQ
Carved minute and clean a keyR2
Of purest lapis lazuliR2
More blue than the blind sky that achesS2
Wreathed with the stars her torturing snakesS2
For the dead god's kiss that never wakesS2
Shot with golden specks of fireZ
Like a virgin with desireZ
Look the levers fern frail frondsT2
Of fantastic diamondsU2
Glimmering with ethereal azureZ
In each exquisite embrasureZ
On the shaft the letters lacedI2
As if dryads lunar chasteI2
With the satyrs were embracedI2
Spelled the secret of the keyR2
Sic pervenias And heR2
Went his wizard way inweavingR2
Dreams of things beyond believingR2
-
When he will the weary worldI2
Of the senses closely curledI2
Like a serpent round his heartI2
Shakes herself and stands apartI2
So the heart's blood flames expandingR2
Strenuous urgent and commandingR2
And the key unlocks the doorZ
Where his love lives evermoreZ
-
She is of the faery bloodI2
All smaragdine flows its floodI2
Glowing in the amber skyR2
To ensorcelled porphyryR2
She hath eyes of glittering flakeR2
Like a cold grey water snakeR2
She hath naked breasts of amberZ
Jetting wine in her bed chamberZ
Whereof whoso stoops and drinksV2
Rees the riddle of the SphinxV2
-
She hath naked limbs of amberZ
Whereupon her children clamberZ
She hath five navels rosy redI2
From the five wounds of God that bledI2
Each wound that mothered her still bleedingR2
And on that blood her babes are feedingR2
Oh like a rose winged pelicanM2
She hath bred blessed babes to PanM2
Oh like a lion hued nightingaleQ
She hath torn her breast on thorns to availQ
The barren rose tree to renewM2
Her life with that disastrous dewM2
Building the rose o' the world alightI2
With music out of the pale moonlightI2
O She is like the river of bloodI2
That broke from the lips of the bastard godI2
When he saw the sacred mother smileQ
On the ibis that flew up the foam of NileQ
Bearing the limbs unblessed unbornM2
That the lurking beast of Nile had tornM2
-
So for the world is weary IR2
These dreadful souls of sense lay byR2
I sacrifice these impure shoonM2
To the cold ray of the waning moonM2
I take the forked hazel staffW2
And the rose of no terrene graffW2
And the lamp of no olive oilQ
With heart's blood that alone may boilQ
With naked breast and feet unshodI2
I follow the wizard way to GodI2
-
Wherever he leads my foot shall followZ
Over the height into the hollowZ
Up to the caves of pure cold breathY
Down to the deeps of foul hot deathY
Across the seas through the firesX2
Past the palace of desiresX2
Where he will whether he will or noZ
If I go I care not whither I goZ
-
For in me is the taint of the faery bloodI2
Fast fast its emerald floodI2
Leaps within me violent rudeI2
Like a bestial faun's beatitudeI2
In me the faery blood runs hardI2
My sires were a druid a devil a bardI2
A beast a wizard a snake and a satyrZ
For as my mother said what does it matterZ
She was a fay pure of the faeryZ
Queen Morgan's daughter by an aeryZ
Demon that came to Orkney onceY2
To pay the Beetle his orisonsY2
-
So it is I that writhe with the twitchZ2
Of the faery blood and the wizard itchZ2
To attain a matter one may not utterZ
Rather than sink in the greasy splutterZ
Of Britons munching their bread and butterZ
Ailing boys and coarse grained girlsY2
Grown to sloppy women and brutal churlsY2
So I am off with staff in handI2
To the endless light of the nameless landI2
-
Darkness spreads its sombre streamsY2
Blotting out the elfin dreamsY2
I might haply be afraidI2
Were it not the Feather maidI2
Leads me softly by the handI2
Whispers me to understandI2
Now when through the world of weepingR2
Light at last starrily creepingR2
Steals upon my babe new sightI2
Light O light that is not lightI2
On my mouth the lips of herZ
Like a stone on my sepulchreZ
Seal my speech with ecstasyY2
Till a babe is born of meY2
That is silent more than IR2
For its inarticulate cryR2
Hushes as its mouth is pressedI2
To the pearl her honey breastI2
While its breath divinely ripplesY2
The rose petals of her nipplesY2
