The South wind said to the palmsA
My lovers sing me psalmsB
But are they as warm as thoseC
That Laylah's lover knowsC
-
The North wind said to the firsD
I have my worshippersD
But are they as keen as hersD
-
The East wind said to the cedarsD
My friends are no secedersD
But is their faith to meE
As firm as his faith must beE
-
The West wind said to the yewsD
My children are pure as dewsD
But what of her lover's museD
-
So to spite the summer weatherF
The four winds howled togetherF
-
But a great Voice from aboveG
Cried What do you know of loveG
-
Do you think all nature worthH
The littlest life upon earthH
-
I made the germ and the antI
The tiger and elephantJ
-
In the least of these there is moreK
Than your elemental warK
-
And the lovers whom ye slightL
Are precious in my sightL
-
Peace to your mischief brewingM
I love to watch their wooingM
-
Of all this Laylah heardN
Never a wordN
-
She lay beneath the treesD
With her lover at her kneesD
-
He sang of God aboveG
And of loveG
-
She lay at his sideO
Well satisfiedO
-
And at set of sunP
They were oneP
-
Before they slept her pure smile curledQ
quot God bless all lovers in the World quotQ
-
And so say I the self same wordQ
Nor doubt God heardQ
