The mighty sound of forests murmuringA
In answer to the dread commandB
The stars that shudder when their kingA
extends his handB
-
His awful hand to bless to curse or movesC
Toward the dimmest denD
In the thick leaves not known of lovesE
Or nymphs or menD
-
Only the sylph's frail gossamer may waveF
Their quiet frondage yetG
Only her dewy tears may laveF
The violetH
-
The mighty answer of the shaken skyI
To his supreme behest the callJ
Of Ibex that behold on highI
Night's funeralK
-
And see the pale moon quiver and departL
Far beyond space the sun ascendM
And draw earth's globe unto his heartL
To make an endM
-
The shriek of startled birds the sobs that tearN
With sudden terror the sharp seaO
That slept and wove its golden hairN
Most mournfullyK
-
The rending of the earth at his commandB
Who wields the wrath of heaven and is dumbP
Hell starts up and before his handB
Is overcomeP
-
I heard these voices and beheld afarQ
These dread works wrought at his behestR
And on his forehead lo a starQ
And on his breastR
-
And on his feet I knew the sandals wereS
More beautiful than flame and whiteT
And on the glory of his hairN
The crown of nightT
-
And I beheld his robe and on its hemU
Were writ unlawful words to sayV
Broidered like lilies with a gemU
More clear than dayV
-
And round him shone so wonderful a lightT
As when on GalileeK
Jesus once walked and clove the nightT
And calmed the seaK
-
I scarce could see his features for the fireS
That dwelt about his browW
Yet for the whiteness of my own desireS
I see him nowW
-
Because my footsteps follow his and treadX
The awful bounds of heaven and makeY
The very graves yield up their deadX
And high thrones shakeY
-
Because my eyes still steadily beholdZ
And dazzle not nor shun the nightT
The foam born lamp of beaten goldZ
And secret mightT
-
Because my forehead bears the sacred NameA2
And my lips bear the brandB
Of Him whose heaven is one flameA2
Whose holy handB
-
Gathers this earth who built the vaults of spaceB2
Moulded the stars and fixed the iron seaK
Because His love lights through my faceB2
And all of meK
-
Because my hand may fasten on the swordC2
Of my heart falter not and smiteC2
Those lampless limits most abhorredC2
Of iron nightC2
-
And pass beyond their horror to attackD2
Fresh foemen light and truth to bringA
Through their untrodden fields of blackD2
A victor kingA
-
I know all must be well all must be freeK
I know God as I know a friendC2
I conquer and most silentlyK
Await the endC2
