Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDCDEEFFGHGHIIJK JKLLMM NONOMMPQPQRMRMMMSSMT MTUUMMMMMM

Purged with the life they left of allA
That makes life paltry and mean and smallA
In their new dedication chargedB
With something heightened enriched enlargedB
That lends a light to their lusty browsC
And a song to the rhythm of their tramping feetD
These are the men that have taken vowsC
These are the hardy the flower the eliteD
These are the men that are moved no moreE
By the will to traffic and grasp and storeE
And ring with pleasure and wealth and loveF
The circles that self is the center ofF
But they are moved by the powers that forceG
The sea forever to ebb and riseH
That hold Arcturus in his courseG
And marshal at noon in tropic skiesH
The clouds that tower on some snow capped chainI
And drift out over the peopled plainI
They are big with the beauty of cosmic thingsJ
Mark how their columns surge They seemK
To follow the goddess with outspread wingsJ
That points toward Glory the soldier's dreamK
With bayonets bare and flags unfurledL
They scale the summits of the worldL
And fade on the farthest golden heightM
In fair horizons full of lightM
-
Comrades in arms there friend or foeN
That trod the perilous toilsome trailO
Through a world of ruin and blood and woeN
In the years of the great decision hailO
Friend or foe it shall matter noughtM
This only matters in fine we foughtM
For we were young and in love or strifeP
Sought exultation and craved excessQ
To sound the wildest debauch in lifeP
We staked our youth and its lovelinessQ
Let idlers argue the right and wrongR
And weigh what merit our causes hadM
Putting our faith in being strongR
Above the level of good and badM
For us we battled and burned and killedM
Because evolving Nature willedM
And it was our pride and boast to beS
The instruments of DestinyS
There was a stately drama writM
By the hand that peopled the earth and airT
And set the stars in the infiniteM
And made night gorgeous and morning fairT
And all that had sense to reason knewU
That bloody drama must be gone throughU
Some sat and watched how the action veeredM
Waited profited trembled cheeredM
We saw not clearly nor understoodM
But yielding ourselves to the masterhandM
Each in his part as best he couldM
We played it through as the author plannedM
