Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDCDEEFFGHGHIIJK JKLLMM NONOMMPQPQRMRMMMSSMT MTUUMMMMMMPurged with the life they left of all | A |
That makes life paltry and mean and small | A |
In their new dedication charged | B |
With something heightened enriched enlarged | B |
That lends a light to their lusty brows | C |
And a song to the rhythm of their tramping feet | D |
These are the men that have taken vows | C |
These are the hardy the flower the elite | D |
These are the men that are moved no more | E |
By the will to traffic and grasp and store | E |
And ring with pleasure and wealth and love | F |
The circles that self is the center of | F |
But they are moved by the powers that force | G |
The sea forever to ebb and rise | H |
That hold Arcturus in his course | G |
And marshal at noon in tropic skies | H |
The clouds that tower on some snow capped chain | I |
And drift out over the peopled plain | I |
They are big with the beauty of cosmic things | J |
Mark how their columns surge They seem | K |
To follow the goddess with outspread wings | J |
That points toward Glory the soldier's dream | K |
With bayonets bare and flags unfurled | L |
They scale the summits of the world | L |
And fade on the farthest golden height | M |
In fair horizons full of light | M |
- | |
Comrades in arms there friend or foe | N |
That trod the perilous toilsome trail | O |
Through a world of ruin and blood and woe | N |
In the years of the great decision hail | O |
Friend or foe it shall matter nought | M |
This only matters in fine we fought | M |
For we were young and in love or strife | P |
Sought exultation and craved excess | Q |
To sound the wildest debauch in life | P |
We staked our youth and its loveliness | Q |
Let idlers argue the right and wrong | R |
And weigh what merit our causes had | M |
Putting our faith in being strong | R |
Above the level of good and bad | M |
For us we battled and burned and killed | M |
Because evolving Nature willed | M |
And it was our pride and boast to be | S |
The instruments of Destiny | S |
There was a stately drama writ | M |
By the hand that peopled the earth and air | T |
And set the stars in the infinite | M |
And made night gorgeous and morning fair | T |
And all that had sense to reason knew | U |
That bloody drama must be gone through | U |
Some sat and watched how the action veered | M |
Waited profited trembled cheered | M |
We saw not clearly nor understood | M |
But yielding ourselves to the masterhand | M |
Each in his part as best he could | M |
We played it through as the author planned | M |
