A shell surprised our post one dayA
And killed a comrade at my sideB
My heart was sick to see the wayA
He suffered as he diedB
-
I dug about the place he fellC
And found no bigger than my thumbD
A fragment of the splintered shellC
In warm aluminumD
-
I melted it and made a mouldE
And poured it in the openingF
And worked it when the cast was coldE
Into a shapely ringF
-
And when my ring was smooth and brightG
Holding it on a rounded stickH
For seal I bade a Turco writeG
'Maktoob' in ArabicH
-
'Maktoob ' 'Tis written So they thinkI
These children of the desert whoJ
From its immense expanses drinkI
Some of its grandeur tooJ
-
Within the book of DestinyK
Whose leaves are time whose cover spaceL
The day when you shall cease to beK
The hour the mode the placeL
-
Are marked they say and you shall notM
By taking thought or using witN
Alter that certain fate one jotM
Postpone or conjure itN
-
Learn to drive fear then from your heartO
If you must perish know O manP
'Tis an inevitable partO
Of the predestined planP
-
And seeing that through the ebon doorQ
Once only you may pass and meetR
Of those that have gone through beforeQ
The mighty the eliteR
-
Guard that not bowed nor blanched with fearS
You enter but serene erectT
As you would wish most to appearS
To those you most respectT
-
So die as though your funeralU
Ushered you through the doors that ledV
Into a stately banquet hallW
Where heroes banquetedV
-
And it shall all depend thereinX
Whether you come as slave or lordV
If they acclaim you as their kinX
Or spurn you from their boardV
-
So when the order comes AttackY
And the assaulting wave deploysZ
And the heart trembles to look backY
On life and all its joysZ
-
Or in a ditch that they seem nearS
To find and round your shallow troughA2
Drop the big shells that you can hearB2
Coming a half mile offA2
-
When not to hear some try to talkC2
And some to clean their guns or singF
And some dig deeper in the chalkD2
I look upon my ringF
-
And nerves relax that were most tenseE2
And Death comes whistling down unheardV
As I consider all the senseE2
Held in that mystic wordV
-
And it brings quieting like balmF2
My heart whose flutterings have ceasedV
The resignation and the calmF2
And wisdom of the EastV
