Oft when sweet music undulated roundA
Like the full moon out of a perfumed seaB
Thine image from the waves of blissful soundA
Rose and thy sudden light illumined meB
-
And in the country leaf and flower and airC
Would alter and the eternal shape emergeD
Because they spoke of thee the fields seemed fairC
And Joy to wait at the horizon's vergeD
-
The little cloud gaps in the east that filledE
Gray afternoons with bits of tenderest blueF
Were windows in a palace pearly silledE
That thy voluptuous traits came glimmering throughF
-
And in the city dominant desireG
For which men toil within its prison barsH
I watched thy white feet moving in the mireI
And thy white forehead hid among the starsH
-
Mystical feminine provoking nudeE
Radiant there with rosy arms outspreadE
Sum of fulfillment sovereign attitudeE
Sensual with laughing lips and thrown back headE
-
Draped in the rainbow on the summer hillsJ
Hidden in sea mist down the hot coast lineK
Couched on the clouds that fiery sunset fillsJ
Blessed remote impersonal divineK
-
The gold all color and grace are folded o'erG
The warmth all beauty and tenderness embowerG
Thou quiverest at Nature's perfumed coreG
The pistil of a myriad petalled flowerG
-
Round thee revolves illimitably wideE
The world's desire as stars around their poleL
Round thee all earthly loveliness besideE
Is but the radiate infinite aureoleL
-
Thou art the poem on the cosmic pageM
In rubric written on its golden groundE
That Nature paints her flowers and foliageN
And rich illumined commentary roundE
-
Thou art the rose that the world's smiles and tearsO
Hover about like butterflies and beesP
Thou art the theme the music of the spheresQ
Echoes in endless variant harmoniesP
-
Thou art the idol in the altar nicheR
Faced by Love's congregated worshippersS
Thou art the holy sacrament round whichR
The vast cathedral is the universeT
-
Thou art the secret in the crystal whereG
For the last light upon the mystery ManU
In his lone tower and ultimate despairG
Searched the gray bearded ZoroastrianU
-
And soft and warm as in the magic sphereG
Deep orbed as in its erubescent fireG
So in my heart thine image would appearG
Curled round with the red flames of my desireG
