IA
My God break not the breakers of the seaB
Nor command to the deep 'Become dry'C
Until I thank Your mercies and I thankD
The waves of the sea and the wind of the westE
Let them propel me to the place of the yoke of Your loveF
And bear far from me the Arab yokeG
And how shall my desires not find fulfillmentH
Seeing as I trust in You and You are pledged to meB
-
IIA
Has the flood come again and made the world a wasteI
So that one cannot see the face of the dry landJ
And no man is there and no beast and no birdK
Have they all come to an end and lain down in sorrowC
To see even a mountain or a marsh would be a rest for meB
And the desert itself would be sweetL
But I look on every side and there is nothingM
But water and sky and arkN
And Leviathan causing the abyss to boilO
So that one considers the deep to be hoaryB
And the heart of the sea conceals the shipP
As though she were a stolen thing in the sea's handJ
As the sea rages my soul is jubilantH
For my ship draws near to the sanctuary of her GodQ
-
IIIA
To You my soul turns in trust or fearC
It is to you that she always gives thanks and worshipR
In You I rejoice on the day I wander forth and fleeB
And You I thank in every flight and wanderingM
Indeed when the ship to bear me over spreads out wings like the wings of a storkS
And when the deep groans and roars beneath meB
As though it had learned from my own entrailsT
And makes the abyss to boil like a potU
Indeed turns the sea into a pot of burning ointmentH
And when the ship from Kittim comes to the sea of the PhilistinesV
And the Hittites come down to the strongholdW
And when creatures press upon the shipP
And sea monsters watch for foodX
And there is a time of trouble as of one that brings forth her first childY
W hen children have approached their birthZ
But there is no strength to bring them forthA2
And though I should lack for food and drinkB2
I take the sweetness of Your name into my mouth for sustenanceC2
And I have no care for worldly goodsD2
Nor for treasures nor for any perishablesT
Even so far that I can leave behind in Spain her that went forth of my loinsT
Sister of my soul and she my only daughterC
And I can forget her son though it pierces my heartE2
And I have nothing left but his memory for a symbolF2
Fruit of my loins child of my delightG2
Ah How should Yehudah forget my grandson YehudahG2
But this is a light thing compared to Your loveF
Since I may enter Your gates with thanksgivingM
And sojourn there and count my heartG2
A burnt offering bound upon Your altarC
And may make my grave in Your landG2
So that it be there a witness for meB
-
IVF
This is your wind O perfumed westG2
With spikenard and apple in his wingsT
You come forth of the treasures of the spice tradersT
You are not of the treasures of the windG2
You propel me on swallow's wings and proclaim liberty for meB
Like pure myrrh from the bundle of spices you have selectedG2
How men must long for you which for your sakeH2
Ride over the crest of the sea on the back of a plankD
Stay not your hand from the shipP
Either when day abides or in the cool breath of the nightG2
But beat out the deep and tear the heart of the seasT
And touch the holy mountains and there will you restG2
Reprimand the east wind which tosses the sea into tempestG2
Until he makes its heart like a seething potG2
What shall the captive do in the hand of GodG2
One moment held back and one moment sent forth freeB
Truly the secret of my quest is in the hand of the HighestG2
Who formed the mountain heights and created the windG2
-
VB
My desire for the living God has constrained meB
To seek the place of the throne of my annointedG2
Even so that it has not suffered me to kissT
The children of my house my friends and my brethrenI2
And that I do not weep for the orchard which I planted and wateredG2
Nor for my green shoots that prosperedG2
And that I abandoned Yehudah and AzarielF2
My two beautiful choice flowersT
And Yitzhak whom I counted as my childG2
Fruit of the sun best of the growth of my moonsT
And that I have all but forgotten the house of prayerC
In whose place of learning was my restG2
And that I forget the delights of my SabbathsT
The beauty of my festivals the glory of my PassoversT
And have given my glory unto othersT
And renounced my praise unto graven imagesT
I have exchanged my abode for a shadow of shrubsT
And for a hedge in the thicket my strong barsT
My soul is satisfied with the chief spicesT
And the scent of the thornbush I use now for perfumeJ2
And I have ceased to walk with my face bending to the ground in forced servility to other menK2
But have set my paths in the heart of the seasT
With the ultimate goal that I may find the footstool of my GodG2
And be able to pour out my soul with my thoughtsT
And stand at the threshold of His holy mount and set openI2
Towards the doors of Heaven's gates my doorsT
And suffer my spikenard to flower by the waters of the JordanI2
And put forth my shoots by SiloahF2
The Lord is with me how shall I fear or dreadG2
Since the angel of His mercy bears my weaponsT
I shall praise His name while I still am aliveF
And thank Him for eternityG2
-
VIF
I say in the heart of the seas to the quaking heartG2
Fearing greatly because they lift up their wavesT
If you believe in God who made the seaG2
And whose Name stands for eternityG2
The sea shall not frighten you when its waves rise upR
For with you is One who has set a bound to the seaG2
VIIF
I cry out to God with a melting heart and knees that strike against each otherC
While anguish is in all loinsG2
On a day when the oarsmen are astounded at the deepL2
When even the pilots find not their handsG2
How shall I be otherwise since I on a ship's deckM2
Suspended between the waters and the heavensG2
Am dancing and tossed aboutG2
But this is merely a light thingM
If I may eventually hold a joyous dance in the midst of you O JerusalemN2
-
VIIIF
Call greeting unto daughters and relativesG2
Peace to brothers and to sistersG2
From the captive of hope who is possessed by the seaG2
And has placed his spirit in the hand of the windsG2
Thrust by the hand of the west into the hand of the eastG2
This one passes to lead on and that one to thrust backO2
Between him and death is but a stepP2
Yes between them is merely the thickness of a plankD
Buried alive in a coffin of woodG2
Upon no floor with no four cubits of earthZ
Nor even with lessG2
He sits he cannot stand upon his feetG2
He lies down he cannot stretch them forthA2
Sick and afraid because of the heathenI2
And because of the marauders and the windsG2
The pilot and the mariner and all their rabbleF2
They are the rulers and captains thereC
Fame is not to the wise nor yet favor to skilled menK2
Save only to those that have skill to swimQ2
My face is troubled at this for a momentG2
How should the innermost heart rejoiceG2
Until I pour out my soul into the bosom of GodG2
Before the place of the Ark and the altarsG2
And bestow upon God who bestows good things upon the unworthyG2
The goodness of songs and praiseG2
