God whom shall I compare to TheeA
When Thou to none canst likened beA
Under what image shall I dareB
To picture Thee when everywhereB
All nature s forms Thine impress bearB
-
Greater O Lord Thy glories areC
Than all the heavenly chariots farC
Whose mind can grasp Thy world s designD
Whose word can fitly Thee defineD
Whose tongue set forth Thy powers divineD
-
Can heart approach can eye beholdE
Thee in Thy righteousness untoldE
Whom did st Thou to Thy counsel callF
When there was none to speak withalF
Since Thou wast first and Lord of allF
-
Thy world eternal witness bearsG
That none its Maker s glory sharesG
Thy wisdom is made manifestH
In all things formed by Thy behestH
All with Thy seal s clear mark impress dA
-
Before the pillars of the skyI
Were raised before the mountains highI
Were wrought ere hills and dales were knownJ
Thou in Thy majesty aloneJ
Did st sit O God upon Thy throneJ
-
Hearts seeking Thee from search refrainK
And weary tongues their praise restrainK
Thyself unbound by time and placeL
Thou dost pervade support embraceL
The world and all created spaceL
-
The sages minds bewildered growM
The lightning speed of thought is slowM
'Awful in praises' art Thou namedN
Thou fillest strong in strength proclaimedN
This universe Thy hand has framedN
-
Deep deep beyond all fathomingI
Far far beyond all measuringI
We can but seek Thy deeds aloneJ
When bow Thy saints before Thy throneJ
Then is Thy faithfulness made knownJ
-
Thy righteousness we can discernO
Thy holy law proclaim and learnO
Is not Thy presence near alwayP
To them who penitently prayQ
But far from those who sinning strayQ
-
Pure souls behold Thee and no needR
Have they of light they hear and heedR
Thee with the mind s keen ear althoughM
The ear of flesh be dull and slowM
Their voices answer to and froM
-
Thy holiness for ever they proclaimS
The Lord of Hosts thrice holy is His nameS
