Matthew Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEG HIHI JKLK MNMM OPOP QGQG

IF Nature for a favourite childA
In thee hath tempered so her clayB
That every hour thy heart runs wildA
Yet never once doth go astrayB
-
Read o'er these lines and then reviewC
This tablet that thus humbly rearsD
In such diversity of hueC
Its history of two hundred yearsD
-
When through this little wreck of fameE
Cipher and syllable thine eyeF
Has travelled down to Matthew's nameE
Pause with no common sympathyG
-
And if a sleeping tear should wakeH
Then be it neither checked nor stayedI
For Matthew a request I makeH
Which for himself he had not madeI
-
Poor Matthew all his frolics o'erJ
Is silent as a standing poolK
Far from the chimney's merry roarL
And murmur of the village schoolK
-
The sighs which Matthew heaved were sighsM
Of one tired out with fun and madnessN
The tears which came to Matthew's eyesM
Were tears of light the dew of gladnessM
-
Yet sometimes when the secret cupO
Of still and serious thought went roundP
It seemed as if he drank it upO
He felt with spirit so profoundP
-
Thou soul of God's best earthly mouldQ
Thou happy Soul and can it beG
That these two words of glittering goldQ
Are all that must remain of theeG
