Trim the sails the weird stars underA
Past the iron hail and thunderA
Past the mystery and the wonderA
Sails our fated barkB
Past the myriad voices hailingC
Past the moaning and the wailingC
The far voices failing failingC
Drive we to the darkB
-
Past the headlands grim and sombreA
Past the shores of mist and slumberA
Leagues on leagues no man may numberA
Soundings none can markB
While the olden voices callingC
One by one behind are fallingC
Into silence dread appallingC
Drift we to the darkB
-
Far behind the sad eyes yearningC
Hands that wring for our returningC
Lamps of love yet vainly burningC
Past the headlands starkB
Through the wintry snows and sleetingB
On our pallid faces beatingB
Through the phantom twilight fleetingB
Drive we to the darkB
-
Without knowledge without warningB
Drive we to no lands of morningB
Far ahead no signals horningB
Hail our nightward barkB
Hopeless helpless weird outdrivenD
Fateless friendless dread unshrivenD
For some race doom unforgivenD
Drive we to the darkB
-
Not one craven or unseemlyE
In the flare light gleaming dimlyE
Each ghost face is watching grimlyE
Past the headlands starkB
Hearts wherein no hope may wakenD
Like the clouds of night wind shakenD
Chartless anchorless forsakenD
Drift we to the darkB
