Seabird elemental spriteA
Moulded of the sun and sprayB
Raven dreary flake of nightA
Drifting in the eye of dayB
What in common have ye twoC
Meeting 'twixt the blue and blueC
-
Thou to eastward carriestB
The keen savour of the foamD
Thou dost bear unto the westB
Fragrance from thy woody homeD
Where perchance a house is thineE
Odorous of the oozy pineE
-
Eastward thee thy proper caresF
Things of mighty moment callG
Thee to westward thine affairsF
Summon weighty matters allG
I where land and sea contestB
Watch you eastward watch you westB
-
Till in snares of fancy caughtB
Mystically changed ye seemH
And the bird becomes a thoughtB
And the thought becomes a dreamH
And the dream outspread on highI
Lords it o'er the abject skyI
-
Surely I have known beforeJ
Phantoms of the shapes ye beK
Haunters of another shoreJ
'Leaguered by another seaK
There my wanderings night and mornL
Reconcile me to the bournL
-
There the bird of happy wingsM
Wafts the ocean news I craveN
Rumours of an isle he bringsM
Gemlike on the golden waveN
But the baleful beak and plumeO
Scatter immelodious gloomO
-
Though the flow'rs be faultless madeB
Perfectly to live and dieI
Though the bright clouds bloom and fadeB
Flow'rlike 'midst a meadowy skyI
Where this raven roams forlornL
Veins of midnight flaw the mornL
-
He not less will croak and croakP
As he ever caws and cawsM
Till the starry dance he brokeP
Till the sphery p an pauseM
And the universal chimeQ
Falter out of tune and timeQ
-
Coils the labyrinthine seaM
Duteous to the lunar willR
But some discord stealthilyR
Vexes the world ditty stillR
And the bird that caws and cawsM
Clasps creation with his clawsM
