Who draws to day the unrighteous swordA
Behold him stand the Man ForswornB
The warrior of the faithless wordC
The pledge disowned the covenant tornB
Who prates of honour truth and trustD
Ere he profanes them in the dustD
-
When to yon fabric grey in fameE
That Windsor lifts against the skyF
In martial cloak the Kaiser cameE
We did not dream it cloaked a spyF
Yet there he sat as now we knowG
A guest a kinsman and a foeG
-
France was a gallant foe and fairH
That looked us proudly in the faceI
With her frank eyes and freeborn airH
And valour half concealed in graceI
Noblest of all with whom we stroveJ
At last she gives us noble loveK
-
But he that took our proffered handL
Thinking to take our birthright tooM
He in this hospitable landL
Bore him as only dastards doM
Here where the Earth still nurtures menN
His hand shall soil not ours againN
-
We know his people great and strongO
On such as these we cast no slurP
Our wonder is that they so longO
Suffer ungalled his bit and spurP
'Tis with no heart of joy that weQ
Arise to smite them on the seaQ
-
Glory we count of lesser worthR
Than wife and babe and hearth and homeS
Theirs is the mandate speeding forthT
Our steps of thunder on the foamS
For them we fight for them we standL
Yea and for faith 'twixt land and landL
-
You that have linked your might with oursU
To break his pride who breaks the lawsV
You wear today 'mid perjured PowersU
The armour of a spotless causeW
Your legions march in Truth arrayedX
And knightly Honour whets your bladeX
-
From Baltic or Biscayan shoresY
Where Loire to the Atlantic runsZ
Where Volga to the Caspian poursY
You have not poured in vain your sonsZ
From laughing lands of Rhone and SeineQ
You have not poured your sons in vainA2
-
Let us a League of Man proclaimE
Against such knavery 'neath a crownB2
As would be rightly held to shameE
A swineherd and his fellow clownB2
Shall all the false and creeping thingsC2
Find a last refuge among KingsC2
-
At least on this unageing throneD2
That baffles the long siege of TimeE2
We have a monarch of our ownD2
To whom a crime is still a crimeE2
And pure in aim there sits afarF2
The patient silent storm worn CzarF2
-
For one sole mortal it remainedG2
One rash insulter of the EarthR
To teach the world wherein he reignedG2
How much a Kaiser's word is worthR
A Kaiser's word a Caitiff's vowH2
Well have we learned their value nowH2
-
Over the bland and kindly DayI2
Unseasonable Night he flingsC2
Sinister darkness blear and greyI2
A horror of malignant wingsC2
Pain and red havoc he bestowsJ2
On them that only asked reposeJ2
-
He is not hungrier for your landsK2
Than he is thirsty for your seasL2
Smite him with all your thunderous handsK2
Fight him and smite him to his kneesL2
You that on him and falsehood hurledM2
Shall guard the fortress of the worldM2
