Who gazes long and well at times beholds | B |
Some sunken feature of the mummied Past | A |
But oftener only the embroidered folds | B |
And soiled magnificence of her rent robe | C |
Whose tattered skirts are ruined dynasties | B |
That sweep the dust of ons in our eyes | B |
And with their trailing pride cumber the globe | C |
For lo the high imperial Past is dead | D |
The air is full of its dissolv d bones | B |
Invincible armies long since vanquish d | E |
Kings that remember not their awful thrones | B |
Powerless potentates and foolish sages | B |
Impede the slow steps of the pompous ages | B |
