| Some sunken feature of the mummied Past | A |
| But oftener only the embroidered folds | B |
| And soiled magnificence of her rent robe | C |
| Whose tattered skirts are ruined dynasties | B |
| That sweep the dust of ons in our eyes | B |
| And with their trailing pride cumber the globe | C |
| For lo the high imperial Past is dead | D |
| The air is full of its dissolv d bones | B |
| Invincible armies long since vanquish d | E |
| Kings that remember not their awful thrones | B |
| Powerless potentates and foolish sages | B |
| Impede the slow steps of the pompous ages | B |
