Felicity Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKHLMN ODPQR SITUVNWXA squalid hideous town where streams run black | A |
With vomit of a hundred roaring mills | B |
Hither occasion calls me and ev'n here | C |
All in the sable reek that wantonly | D |
Defames the sunlight and deflowers the morn | E |
One may at least surmise the sky still blue | F |
Ev'n here the myriad slaves of the machine | G |
Deem life a boon and here in days far sped | H |
I overheard a kind eyed girl relate | I |
To her companions how a favouring chance | J |
By some few shillings weekly had increased | K |
The earnings of her household and she said | H |
'So now we are happy having all we wished ' | L |
Felicity indeed though more it lay | M |
In wanting little than in winning all | N |
- | |
Felicity indeed Across the years | O |
To me her tones come back rebuking me | D |
Spreader of toils to snare the wandering Joy | P |
No guile may capture and no force surprise | Q |
Only by them that never wooed her won | R |
- | |
O curst with wide desires and spacious dreams | S |
Too cunningly do ye accumulate | I |
Appliances and means of happiness | T |
E'er to be happy Lavish hosts ye make | U |
Elaborate preparation to receive | V |
A shy and simple guest who warned of all | N |
The ceremony and circumstance wherewith | W |
Ye mean to entertain her will not come | X |
