Success to James ScrymgeourA
He's a very good manB
And to gainsay itC
There's few people canB
-
Because he makes the heartsD
Of the poor o'erjoyedC
By trying to find work for themE
When they're unemployedC
-
And to their complaintsF
He has always an attentive earA
And ever ready to help themE
When unto him they draw nearA
-
And no matter what your occupation isG
Or what is your creedC
He will try to help youH
In the time of needC
-
Because he has the fearA
Of God within his heartC
And the man that fears GodC
Always takes the poor's partC
-
And blessed is the manB
That is kind to the poorA
For his reward in heavenI
'Tis said in the Scripture is sureA
-
And I hope heaven will beJ
Mr James Sctymgeour's rewardC
For his struggles on behalf of the poorA
Are really vexatious and hardC
-
For he is to be seen dailyJ
Walking along our streetsK
With a Christian looking countenanceL
And a kind word to all he meetsK
-
Besides he is void of all prideC
And wouldn't feel ashamedC
To be seen with a beggarA
Or a tinker walking by his sideC
-
Fellow citizens of DundeeJ
Isn't it really very niceM
To think of James Scrymgeour tryingN
To rescue fallen creatures from the paths of viceM
-
And in the winter he tries to provideC
Hot dinners for the poor children of DundeeJ
Who are starving with hunger no doubtC
And in the most abject povertyJ
-
He is a little deaf no doubtC
But not deaf to the cries of hungry menO
No he always tries to do his bestC
To procure bread for themE
-
And at the Sabbath morning free breakfastsP
He is often seen thereA
Administering to the wants of the hungryJ
And joining in prayerA
-
He is a man of noble principlesQ
As far as can thinkR
And the noblest principle he has gotC
Is he abhors the demon drinkR
-
And in my opinion he is rightC
As far as I can seeJ
And I hereby proclaim that such a manB
Is an honour to DundeeJ
-
Because he is always workingN
For the poor people's goodC
Kind soul trying hardC
To procure for them clothing and foodC
-
Success to him and his familyJ
And may God them defendC
Why fellow citizens of DundeeJ
Because he is the poor man's friendC
