As I stood upon the sandy beachA
One morn near Pentland FerryB
I saw a beautiful brigantineC
And all her crew seem'd merryB
-
When lo the wind began to howlD
And the clouds began to frownC
And in the twinkling of an eyeE
The rain came pouring downC
-
Then the sea began to swellF
And seem'd like mountains highE
And the sailors on board that brigantineC
To God for help did loudly cryE
-
Oh it was an awful sightG
To see them struggling with all their mightG
And Imploring God their lives to saveH
From a merciless watery graveH
-
Their cargo consisted of window glassI
Also coal and linseed oilJ
Which helped to calm the raging seaB
That loud and angry did boilJ
-
Because when the bottoms of the barrelsK
Were with the raging billows stove inC
The oil spread o'er the waterL
And smoothed the stormy billows' dinC
-
Then she began to duck in the trough of the seaB
Which was fearful to beholdM
And her crossyards dipped in the big billowsN
As from side to side she rolledM
-
She was tossed about on the merciless seaB
And received some terrible shocksO
Until at last she ran againstP
A jagged reef of rocksO
-
'Twas then she was rent asunderL
And the water did rush inC
It was most dreadful to hear itQ
It made such a terrific dinC
-
Then the crew jumped into the small boatsR
While the Storm fiend did roarS
And were very near being drownedT
Before they got ashoreS
-
Then the coal dust blackened the waterL
Around her where she layU
And the barrels of linseed oilJ
They floated far awayU
-
And when the crew did get ashoreS
They were shaking with cold and frightG
And they went away to Huna innC
And got lodgings for the nightG
