Rhyme Scheme: ABCC DECC FFDD GGHH CCII JKLM FFNN OOPH LLGG

'Twas on the th of November and in the year ofA
That the cheers of the Gordon Highlanders ascended to heavenB
As they stormed the Dargai heights without delayC
And made the Indian rebels fly in great dismayC
-
Men of the Gordon Highlanders Colonel Mathias saidD
Now my brave lads who never were afraidE
Our General says ye must take Dargai heights to dayC
So forward and charge them with your bayonets without dismayC
-
Then with a ringing cheer and at the word of commandF
They bounded after their leaders and made a bold standF
And dashing across the open ground with their officers at their headD
They drove the enemy from their position without any dreadD
-
In that famous charge it was a most beautiful sightG
To see the regimental pipers playing with all their mightG
But alas one of them was shot through both ankles and fell to the groundH
But still he played away while bullets fell on every side aroundH
-
Oh it must have been a gorgeous sight that dayC
To see two thousand Highlanders dressed up in grand arrayC
And to hear the pibroch sounding loud and clearI
While the Highlanders rushed upon the foe with a loud cheerI
-
The Gordon Highlanders have gained a lasting fameJ
Which for ages to come will long remainK
The daring gallantry they displayed at the storming of DargaiL
Which will be handed down to posterityM
-
Methinks I see that gallant and heroic bandF
When brave Colonel Mathias gave them the commandF
As they rushed upon the rebel horde which was their desireN
Without the least fear through a sheet of fireN
-
Then the rebels fled like frightened spritesO
And the British were left masters of the Dargai heightsO
But alas brave Captain Robinson was mortally wounded and cut downP
And for his loss many tears from his comrades fell to the groundH
-
Success to the Gordon Highlanders wherever they goL
May they always be enabled to conquer the foeL
And may God guard them always in the fightG
And give them always strength to put their enemies to flightG
