The Heatherblend Club Banquet Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCC DDEE FFGH IJKL MNOO EEPP OOQQ RRST UUVV GGWW OOXY VVOO'Twas on the th of October in the year | A |
I was invited to Inverness not far from the sea shore | B |
To partake of a banquet prepared by the Heatherblend Club | C |
Gentlemen who honoured me without any hubbub | C |
- | |
The banquet was held in the Gellion Hotel | D |
And the landlord Mr Macpherson treated me right well | D |
Also the servant maids were very kind to me | E |
Especially the girl that polished my boots most beautiful to see | E |
- | |
The banquet consisted of roast beef potatoes and red wine | F |
Also hare soup and sherry and grapes most fine | F |
And baked pudding and apples lovely to be seen | G |
Also rich sweet milk and delicious cream | H |
- | |
Mr Gossip a noble Highlander acted as chairman | I |
And when the banquet was finished the fun began | J |
And I was requested to give a poetic entertainment | K |
Which I gave and which pleased them to their hearts' content | L |
- | |
And for my entertainment they did me well reward | M |
By entitling me there the Heather Blend Club bard | N |
Likewise I received an Illuminated Address | O |
Also a purse of silver I honestly confess | O |
- | |
Mr A J Stewart was very kind to me | E |
And tried all he could to make me happy | E |
And several songs were sung by gentlemen there | P |
It was the most social gathering I've been in I do declare | P |
- | |
Oh magnificent city of Inverness | O |
And your beautiful river I must confess | O |
With its lovely scenery on each side | Q |
Would be good for one's health there to reside | Q |
- | |
There the blackbird and the mavis doth sing | R |
Making the woodlands with their echoes to ring | R |
During the months of July May and June | S |
When the trees and the shrubberies are in full bloom | T |
- | |
And to see the River Ness rolling smoothly along | U |
Together with the blackbird's musical song | U |
While the sun shines bright in the month of May | V |
'Twill help to drive dull care away | V |
- | |
And Macbeth's Castle is grand to be seen | G |
Situated on Castle Hill which is beautiful and green | G |
'Twas there Macbeth lived in days of old | W |
And a great tyrant he was be it told | W |
- | |
I wish the Heatherblend members every success | O |
Hoping God will prosper them and bless | O |
Long May Dame Fortune smile upon them | X |
For all of them I've met are kind gentlemen | Y |
- | |
And in conclusion I must say | V |
I never received better treatment in my day | V |
Than I received from my admirers in bonnie Inverness | O |
This on my soul and conscience I do confess | O |
