Alas Prince Henry of Battenberg is deadA
And I hope has gone to heaven its streets to treadA
And to sing with God's saints aboveB
Where all is joy and peace and loveB
-
'Twas in the year of and on the th of FebruaryC
Prince Henry was buried at Whippingham a solemn sight to seeC
As the funeral moved off it was a very impressive sightD
First came the military and police and volunteers from the Isle of WightD
-
Then came the carriage party of the Scots GuardsE
While the people uncovered their heads as it passed onwardsF
And many of them did sob and sighG
When the gun carriage with the coffin was passing byG
-
Prince Henry's charger was led by Richter his stud groomH
And depicted in the people's faces there was a sad gloomH
When they saw the noble charger of the deadA
It seemed that all joy from them had fledA
-
The Queen's carriage was followed by the Princess of Wales and other PrincessesI
All clad in gorgeous mourning dressesJ
And there was a number of military representatives which enhanced the sceneK
And as the procession moved along it was solemn in the extremeL
-
Her Majesty looked very sad and sereneK
Leaning back in her carriage could plainly be seenK
And the carriage was drawn by a pair of greys in grand harnessM
And Her Majesty seemed to be in deep distressN
-
By Her Majesty's side sat the Princess BeatriceM
And the two younger Battenberg children looking very niceO
And by the coffin walked the elder Prince immediatelyC
Between Prince Louis and Prince Joseph holding their hands tenderlyC
-
The Dead March was played by the Marine BandP
And the music was solemn and very grandP
And accompanied by the roll of muffled drumsQ
Whilst among the spectators were heard sighs and humsQ
-
And when the procession arrived at the church of WhippinghamL
Then the coffin was carried inside of the good manR
And was then laid in its resting placeS
While sorrow was depicted in every faceS
-
Then there was the firing of guns with their earthly ThunderT
Which made the people start and wonderT
And the tolling of the village bellsU
While the solemn music on the air swellsU
-
And the people said Prince Henry was a good manR
But now he's laid low in the church of WhippinghamL
But when the Grim King his dart does throwV
None can escape death high or lowV
-
The funeral service was certainly very niceO
Which was by the request of Princess BeatriceM
Which was the rendering of Sullivan's anthem Brother before us thou art goneW
I hope unto thy heavenly homeL
-
No Doubt the Princess Beatrice will mourn for himL
But to mourn for the dead it is a sinX
Therefore I hope God will comfort her alwaysY
And watch o'er her children night and dayZ
-
Prince Henry was a God fearing manR
And to deny it few people canR
And very kind to his children dearA2
And for the loss of him they will drop a tearB2
-
His relatives covered the coffin lid with wreaths of flowersC2
While adown their cheeks flowed tears in showersC2
Then the service concluded with Christ will gather His ownD2
And each one left with a sad heart and went homeL
