Oh thou demon Drink thou fell destroyerA
Thou curse of society and its greatest annoyerA
What hast thou done to society let me thinkB
I answer thou hast caused the most of ills thou demon DrinkB
-
Thou causeth the mother to neglect her childC
Also the father to act as he were wildC
So that he neglects his loving wife and family dearA
By spending his earnings foolishly on whisky rum and beerA
-
And after spending his earnings foolishly he beats his wifeD
The man that promised to protect her during lifeD
And so the man would if there was no drink in societyE
For seldom a man beats his wife in a state of sobrietyE
-
And if he does perhaps he finds his wife fou'D
Then that causes no doubt a great hullaballoF
When he finds his wife drunk he begins to frownG
And in a fury of passion he knocks her downG
-
And in that knock down she fractures her headH
And perhaps the poor wife she is killed deadH
Whereas if there was no strong drink to be gotI
To be killed wouldn't have been the poor wife's lotI
-
Then the unfortunate husband is arrested and cast into jailF
And sadly his fate he does bewailF
And he curses the hour that ever was bornJ
And paces his cell up and down very forlornJ
-
And when the day of his trial draws nearA
No doubt for the murdering of his wife he drops a tearA
And he exclaims Oh thou demon Drink through thee I must dieK
And on the scaffold he warns the people from drink to flyK
-
Because whenever a father or a mother takes to drinkB
Step by step on in crime they do sinkB
Until their children loses all affection for themL
And in justice we cannot their children condemnL
-
The man that gets drunk is little else than a foolF
And is in the habit no doubt of advocating for Home RuleF
But the best Home Rule for him as far as I can understandM
Is the abolition of strong drink from the landM
-
And the men that get drunk in general wants Home RuleF
But such men I rather think should keep their heads coolF
And try and learn more sense I most earnestlty do prayA
And help to get strong drink abolished without delayA
-
If drink was abolished how many peaceful homes would there beE
Just for instance in the beautiful town of DundeeE
then this world would be heaven whereas it's a hellF
An the people would have more peace in it to dwellF
-
Alas strong drink makes men and women fanaticsN
And helps to fill our prisons and lunaticsN
And if there was no strong drink such cases wouldn't beE
Which would be a very glad sight for all christians to seeE
-
O admit a man may be a very good manO
But in my opinion he cannot be a true ChristianP
As long as he partakes of strong drinkB
The more that he may differently thinkB
-
But no matter what he thinks I say nayA
For by taking it he helps to lead his brither astrayA
Whereas if he didn't drink he would help to reform societyE
And we would soon do away with all inebrietyE
-
Then for the sake of society and the Church of GodE
Let each one try to abolish it at home and abroadE
Then poverty and crime would decrease and be at a standE
And Christ's Kingdom would soon be established throughout the landE
-
Therefore brothers and sisters pause and thinkB
And try to abolish the foul fiend DrinkB
Let such doctrine be taught in church and schoolF
That the abolition of strong drink is the only Home RuleF
