The Ancient Town Of Leith Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CDEE DCFF GGHH II E AAJJ CCKK LLII MMEE NNOO PPQQ RREE

Ancient town of Leith most wonderful to be seenA
With your many handsome buildings and lovely links so greenA
And the first buildings I may mention are the Courthouse and Town HallB
Also Trinity House and the Sailors' Home of CallB
-
Then as for Leith Fort it was erected in which is really grandC
And which is now the artillery headquarters in Bonnie ScotlandD
And as for the Docks they are magnificent to seeE
They comprise five docks two piers yards long respectivelyE
-
And there's steamboat communication with London and the North of ScotlandD
And the fares are really cheap and the accommodation most grandC
Then there's many public works in Leith such as flour millsF
And chemical works where medicines are made for curing many illsF
-
Besides there are sugar refineries and distilleriesG
Also engineer works saw mills rope works and breweriesG
Where many of the inhabitants are daily employedH
And the wages they receive make their hearts feel overjoyedH
-
In past times Leith shared the fortunes of Edinboro'I
Because if withstood nine months' siege which caused them great sorrowI
They fought against the Protestants in and in '-
But they beat them back manfully and made them fleeE
-
Then there's Bailie Gibson's fish shop most elegant to be seenA
And the fish he sells there are beautiful and cleanA
And for himself he is a very good manJ
And to deny it there's few people canJ
-
The suburban villas of Leith are elegant and grandC
With accommodation that might suit the greatest lady in the landC
And the air is pure and good for the people's healthK
And health I'm sure is better by far than wealthK
-
The Links of Leith are beautiful for golfers to playL
After they have finished the toils of the dayL
It is good for their health to play at golf thereI
On that very beautiful green and breathe the pure airI
-
The old town of Leith is situated at the junction of the River of LeithM
Which springs from the land of heather and heathM
And no part in the Empire is growing so rapidlyE
Which the inhabitants of Leith are right glad to seeE
-
And Leith in every way is in itself independentN
And has been too busy to attend to its own adornmentN
But I venture to say and also mentionO
That the authorities to the town will pay more attentionO
-
Ancient town of Leith I must now conclude my museP
And to write in praise of thee my pen does not refuseP
Because the inhabitants to me have been very kindQ
And I'm sure more generous people would be hard to findQ
-
They are very affable in temper and void of prideR
And I hope God will always for them provideR
May He shower His blessings upon them by land and seaE
Because they have always been very kind to meE
