'Twas in the year of and on the th of JuneA
Lord Roberts entered Pretoria in the afternoonA
His triumphal entry was magnificent to seeB
The British Army marching behind him fearlesslyC
-
With their beautiful banners unfurled to the breezeD
But the scene didn't the Boers pleaseD
And they immediately made some show of fightE
But at the charge of the bayonet they were put to flightE
-
The troops by the people were received with loud cheersF
While many of them through joy shed joyous tearsG
Because Lord Roberts from bondage had set them freeB
Which made them dance and sing with gleeB
-
Lord Roberts' march into Pretoria was inspiring to seeB
It is reckoned one of the greatest achievements in our military historyB
Because the Boers were watching him in front and behindH
But he scattered them like chaff before the windH
-
Oh it was a most beautiful and inspiring sightE
To see the British bayonets glittering in the sunlightE
Whilst the bands played See the conquering hero comesI
While the people in ecstasy towards them runJ
-
The British marched into Pretoria like the rushing tideK
And the Boers around Pretoria there no longer could abideK
Because the British at the charge of the bayonet made them run with fearL
And fly from Pretoria just like wild dearL
-
Then Lord Roberts cried Pull down the Transvaal FlagM
And hoist the Union Jack instead of the Transvaal ragM
And shout 'Britannia for ever ' and 'Long live our Queen '-
For she is the noblest Queen the world has ever seenN
-
Then the Union Jack was hoisted and unfurled to the breezeD
Which certainly did the Boers displeaseD
When they saw the Union Jack flying o'er their capitalC
The sight thereof amazed them and did them appallC
-
And when old Kruger saw Lord Roberts he shook with frightE
Then he immediately disguised himself and took to flightE
Leaving his poor wife in Pretoria behindH
But the British troops have treated her very kindH
-
Now let us all thank Lord Roberts for his great braveryB
Who has gained for the people of Pretoria their libertyB
By his skillful tactics and great generalship be it toldO
And the courage of his soldiers who fought like lions boldO
-
Lord Roberts is a brave man be it saidP
Who never was the least afraidQ
To defend his Queen and country when called uponR
And by his valorous deeds great battles he has wonJ
-
Then success to Lord Roberts and the British ArmyB
May God protect them by land and by seaB
And enable them always to conquer the BoersS
And beat all foreign foes from our shoresS
