An Address To The Rev. George Gilfillan Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDDDEEFFBBGGCC BHBIIJJ

All hail to the Rev George Gilfillan of DundeeA
He is the greatest preacher I did ever hear or seeA
He is a man of genius brightB
And in him his congregation does delightB
Because they find him to be honest and plainC
Affable in temper and seldom known to complainC
He preaches in a plain straightforward wayD
The people flock to hear him night and dayD
And hundreds from the doors are often turn'd awayD
Because he is the greatest preacher of the present dayD
He has written the life of Sir Waiter ScottE
And while he lives he will never be forgotE
Nor when he is deadF
Because by his admirers it will be often readF
And fill their minds with wonder and delightB
And wile away the tedious hours on a cold winter's nightB
He has also written about the Bards of the BibleG
Which occupied nearly three years in which he was not idleG
Because when he sits down to write he does it with might and mainC
And to get an interview with him it would be almost vainC
And in that he is always rightB
For the Bible tells us whatever your hands findeth to doH
Do it with all your mightB
Rev George Gilfillan of Dundee I must conclude my museI
And to write in praise of thee my pen doss not refuseI
Nor does it give me pain to tell the world fearlessly that whenJ
You are dead they shall not look upon your like againJ
