Welcome thrice welcome to the city of DundeeA
The great African explorer Henry M StanleyA
Who went out to Africa its wild regions to exploreB
And travelled o'er wild and lonely deserts fatigued and footsoreB
-
And what he and his little band suffered will never be forgotC
Especially one in particular Major Edmund BarttelotC
Alas the brave heroic Officer by a savage was shotC
The commandant of the rear column O hard has been his lotC
-
O think of the noble Stanley and his gallant little bandC
While travelling through gloomy forests and devastated landC
And suffering from all kinds of hardships under a burning sunD
But the brave hero has been successful and the victory's wonD
-
While in Africa he saw many wonderful sightsE
And was engaged no doubt in many savage fightsE
But the wise Creator was with him all alongF
And now he's home again to us I hope quite strongF
-
And during his travels in Africa he made strange discoveriesG
He discovered a dwarfish race of people called pigmiesG
Who are said to be the original natives of AfricaH
And when Stanley discovered them he was struck with aweI
-
One event in particular is most worthy to relateC
How God preserved him from a very cruel fateC
He and his Officers were attacked while sailing their boatC
By the savages of Bumbireh all eager to cut his throatC
-
They seized him by the hair and tugged it without fearB
While one of his men received a poke in the ribs with a spearB
But Stanley having presence of mind instantly contrivesG
To cry to his men Shove off the boat and save your livesG
-
Then savages swarmed into three canoes very close byJ
And every bow was drawn while they savagely did cryJ
But thee heroic Stanley quickly shot two of them deadC
Then the savages were baffled and immediately fledC
-
This incident is startling but nevertheless trueB
And in midst of all dangers the Lord brought him throughB
Then welcome him thrice welcome him right cheerfullyA
Shouting Long live the great African explorer Henry M StanleyA
-
Therefore throw open the gates of the city of DundeeA
And receive him with loud cheers three time threeA
And sound your trumpets and beat your drumsG
And play up See the Conquering Hero ComesG
