A New Temperance Poem, In Memory Of My Departed Parents, Who Were Sober Living & God Fearing People Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAA CCAA DEFF CCGG HHII AAJJ KKII LMNN OOPP QQHH RRSS RRTT RRUV AAWW| My parents were sober living and often did pray | A |
| For their family to abstain from intoxicating drink alway | B |
| Because they knew it would lead them astray | A |
| Which no God fearing man will dare to gainsay | A |
| - | |
| Some people do say that God made strong drink | C |
| But he is not so cruel I think | C |
| To lay a stumbling block in his children's way | A |
| And then punish them for going astray | A |
| - | |
| No God has more love for his children than mere man | D |
| To make strong drink their souls to damn | E |
| His love is more boundless than mere man's by far | F |
| And to say not it would be an unequal par | F |
| - | |
| A man that truly loves his family wont allow them to drink | C |
| Because he knows seldom about God they will think | C |
| Besides he knows it will destroy their intellect | G |
| And cause them to hold their parents in disrespect | G |
| - | |
| Strong drink makes the people commit all sorts of evil | H |
| And must have been made by the Devil | H |
| For to make them quarrel murder steal and fight | I |
| And prevent them from doing what is right | I |
| - | |
| The Devil delights in leading the people astray | A |
| So that he may fill his kingdom with them without delay | A |
| It is the greatest pleasure he can really find | J |
| To be the enemy of all mankind | J |
| - | |
| The Devil delights in breeding family strife | K |
| Especially betwixt man and wife | K |
| And if the husband comes home drunk at night | I |
| He laughs and crys ha ha what a beautiful sight | I |
| - | |
| And if the husband asks his supper when lie comes in | L |
| The poor wife must instantly find it for him | M |
| And if she cannot find it he will curse and frown | N |
| And very likely knock his loving wife down | N |
| - | |
| Then the children will scream aloud | O |
| And the Devil no doubt will feel very proud | O |
| If he can get the children to leave their own fireside | P |
| And to tell their drunken father they won't with him reside | P |
| - | |
| Strong drink will cause the gambler to rob and kill his brother | Q |
| Aye also his father and his mother | Q |
| All for the sake of getting money to gamble | H |
| Likewise to drink cheat and wrangle | H |
| - | |
| And when the burglar wants to do his work very handy | R |
| He plies himself with a glass of Whisky Rum or Brandy | R |
| To give himself courage to rob and kill | S |
| And innocent people's blood to spill | S |
| - | |
| Whereas if he couldn't get Whisky Rum or Brandy | R |
| He wouldn't do his work so handy | R |
| Therefore in that respect let strong drink be abolished in time | T |
| And that will cause a great decrease in crime | T |
| - | |
| Therefore for this sufficient reason remove it from society | R |
| For seldom burglary is committed in a state of sobriety | R |
| And I earnestly entreat ye all to join with heart and hand | U |
| And to help to chase away the Demon drink from bonnie Scotland | V |
| - | |
| I beseech ye all to kneel down and pray | A |
| And implore God to take it away | A |
| Then this world would be a heaven whereas it is a hell | W |
| And the people would have more peace in it to dwell | W |
