Bess Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHAIJ KACLMNOPAQR

Ours are the streets where Bess first met herA
cancer She went to work every day past theB
secure houses At her job in the libraryC
she arranged better and better flowers and whenD
students asked for books her hand went outE
to help In the last year of her lifeF
she had to keep her friends from knowingG
how happy they were She listened while theyH
complained about food or work or the weatherA
And the great national events dancedI
their grotesque fake importance AlwaysJ

Pain moved where she moved She walkedK
ahead it came She hid it found herA
No one ever served another so trulyC
no enemy ever meant so strong a hateL
It was almost as if there was no roomM
left for her on earth But she rememberedN
where joy used to live She straightened its flowersO
she did not weep when she passed its housesP
and when finally she pulled into a tiny cornerA
and slipped from pain her hand openedQ
again and the streets opened and she wished all wellR
