Hail curious wights to whom so fairA
The form of mortal flies isB
Who deem those grubs beyond compareA
Which common sense despisesB
-
Whether o'er hill morass or moundC
You make your sportsman salliesD
Or that your prey in gardens foundC
Is urg'd thro' walks and alleysD
-
Yet in the fury of the chaseE
No slope could e'er retard youF
Blest if one fly repay the raceE
Or painted wing reward youF
-
Fierce as Camilla o'er the plainG
Pursu'd the glittering strangerH
Still ey'd the purple's pleasing stainG
And knew not fear nor dangerH
-
'Tis you dispense the fav'rite meatI
To nature's filmy peopleJ
Know what conserves they choose to eatI
And what liquers to tippleJ
-
And if her brood of insects diesK
You sage assistance lend herH
Can stoop to pimp for am'rous fliesK
And help 'em to engenderH
-
'Tis you protect their pregnant hourH
And when the birth's at handL
Exerting your obstetric pow'rM
Prevent a mothless landL
-
Yet oh howe'er your tow'ring viewF
Above gross objects risesN
Whate'er refinements you pursueF
Hear what a friend advisesB
-
A friend who weigh'd with yours must prizeK
Domitian's idle passionO
That wrought the death of teasing fliesK
But ne'er their propagationO
-
Let Flavia's eyes more deeply warmP
Nor thus your hearts determineO
To slight dame Nature's fairest formP
And sigh for Nature's verminQ
-
And speak with some respect of beauxR
No more as triflers treat 'emS
'Tis better learn to save one's clothesT
Than cherish moths that eat 'emS
