Urit spes animi credula mutui HorA
-
ImitationB
-
Fond hope of a reciprocal desireA
Inflames the breastC
-
-
'Twas not by beauty's aid aloneD
That Love usurp'd his airy throneD
His boasted power display'dE
'Tis kindness that secures his aimF
'Tis hope that feeds the kindling flameF
Which beauty first convey'dE
-
In Clara's eyes the lightning viewG
Her lips with all the rose's hueG
Have all its sweets combinedH
Yet vain the blush and faint the fireA
Till lips at once and eyes conspireA
To prove the charmer kindH
-
Though wit might gild the tempting snareA
With softest accent sweetest airA
By envy's self admiredI
If Lesbia's wit betray'd her scornJ
In vain might every Grace adornJ
What every Muse inspiredI
-
Thus airy Strephon tuned his lyreA
He scorn'd the pangs of wild desireA
Which lovesick swains endureA
Resolved to brave the keenest dartK
Since frowns could never wound his heartK
And smiles must ever cureA
-
But ah how false these maxims proveL
How frail security from loveM
Experience hourly showsN
Love can imagined smiles supplyO
On every charming lip and eyeO
Eternal sweets bestowsN
-
In vain we trust the fair one's eyesP
In vain the sage explores the skiesP
To learn from stars his fateQ
Till led by fancy wide astrayA
He finds no planet mark his wayA
Convinced and wise too lateQ
-
As partial to their words we proveL
Then boldly join the lists of loveM
With towering hopes suppliedR
So heroes taught by doubtful shrinesS
Mistook their deity's designsS
Then took the field and diedR
