Ode To Memory Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFF GHGHII DJDJKK LMLMNG DODOPP FAFAQR STSTUU FVFWXXO Memory Celestial maid | A |
Who glean'st the flowerets cropt by time | B |
And suffering not a leaf to fade | A |
Preserv'st the blossoms of our prime | B |
Bring bring those moments to my mind | C |
When life was new and Lesbia kind | C |
- | |
And bring that garland to my sight | D |
With which my favour'd crook she bound | E |
And bring that wreath of roses bright | D |
Which then my festive temples crown'd | E |
And to my raptured ear convey | F |
The gentle things she deign'd to say | F |
- | |
And sketch with care the Muse's bower | G |
Where Isis rolls her silver tide | H |
Nor yet omit one reed or flower | G |
That shines on Cherwell's verdant side | H |
If so thou mayst those hours prolong | I |
When polish'd Lycon join'd my song | I |
- | |
The song it 'vails not to recite | D |
But sure to soothe our youthful dreams | J |
Those banks and streams appear'd more bright | D |
Than other banks than other streams | J |
Or by the softening pencil shown | K |
Assume they beauties not their own | K |
- | |
And paint that sweetly vacant scene | L |
When all beneath the poplar bough | M |
My spirits light my soul serene | L |
I breathed in verse one cordial vow | M |
That nothing should my soul inspire | N |
But friendship warm and love entire | G |
- | |
Dull to the sense of new delight | D |
On thee the drooping muse attends | O |
As some fond lover robb'd of sight | D |
On thy expressive power depends | O |
Nor would exchange thy glowing lines | P |
To live the lord of all that shines | P |
- | |
But let me chase those vows away | F |
Which at Ambition's shrine I made | A |
Nor ever let thy skill display | F |
Those anxious moments ill repaid | A |
Oh from my breast that season rase | Q |
And bring my childhood in its place | R |
- | |
Bring me the bells the rattle bring | S |
And bring the hobby I bestrode | T |
When pleased in many a sportive ring | S |
Around the room I jovial rode | T |
Even let me bid my lyre adieu | U |
And bring the whistle that I blew | U |
- | |
Then will I muse and pensive say | F |
Why did not these enjoyments last | V |
How sweetly wasted I the day | F |
While innocence allow'd to waste | W |
Ambition's toils alike are vain | X |
But ah for pleasure yield us pain | X |
