A ballad Written about the time of his execution in the yearA
-
Come listen to my mournful taleB
Ye tender hearts and lovers dearA
Nor will you scorn to heave a sighC
Nor need you blush to shed a tearD
-
And thou dear Kitty peerless maidE
Do thou a pensive ear inclineF
For thou canst weep at every woeG
And pity every plaint but mineF
-
Young Dawson was a gallant boyH
A brighter never trod the plainI
And well he loved one charming maidE
And dearly was he loved againJ
-
One tender maid she loved him dearA
Of gentle blood the damsel cameK
And faultless was her beauteous formL
And spotless was her virgin fameK
-
But curse on party's hateful strifeM
That led the favour'd youth astrayN
The day the rebel clans appear'dO
O had he never seen that dayN
-
Their colours and their sash he woreP
And in the fatal dress was foundQ
And now he must that death endureR
Which gives the brave the keenest woundQ
-
How pale was then his true love's cheekS
When Jemmy's sentence reach'd her earT
For never yet did Alpine snowsU
So pale or yet so chill appearA
-
With faltering voice she weeping saidV
'O Dawson monarch of my heartW
Think not thy death shall end our lovesX
For thou and I will never partW
-
'Yet might sweet mercy find a placeY
And bring relief to Jemmy's woesU
O George without a prayer for theeZ
My orisons should never closeA2
-
'The gracious prince that gave him lifeM
Would crown a never dying flameK
And every tender babe I boreP
Should learn to lisp the giver's nameK
-
'But though he should be dragg'd in scornB2
To yonder ignominious treeZ
He shall not want one constant friendC2
To share the cruel Fates' decree '-
-
Oh then her mourning coach was call'dD2
The sledge moved slowly on beforeP
Though borne in a triumphal carE2
She had not loved her favourite moreP
-
She follow'd him prepared to viewF2
The terrible behests of lawG2
And the last scene of Jemmy's woesU
With calm and steadfast eye she sawG2
-
Distorted was that blooming faceY
Which she had fondly loved so longH2
And stifled was that tuneful breathI2
Which in her praise had sweetly sungJ2
-
And sever'd was that beauteous neckK2
Round which her arms had fondly closedL2
And mangled was that beauteous breastM2
On which her lovesick head reposedM2
-
And ravish'd was that constant heartM2
She did to every heart preferN2
For though it could its king forgetM2
'Twas true and loyal still to herN2
-
Amid those unrelenting flamesO2
She bore this constant heart to seeZ
But when 'twas moulder'd into dustM2
'Yet yet ' she cried 'I follow theeZ
-
'My death my death alone can showG
The pure the lasting love I boreP
Accept O Heaven of woes like oursP2
And let us let us weep no more '-
-
The dismal scene was o'er and pastM2
The lover's mournful hearse retiredM2
The maid drew back her languid headM2
And sighing forth his name expiredM2
-
Though justice ever must prevailB
The tear my Kitty sheds is dueM2
For seldom shall she hear a taleB
So sad so tender yet so trueM2
