Born near the scene for Kenelm's fate renown'dA
I take my plaintive reed and range the groveB
And raise my lay and bid the rocks resoundA
The savage force of empire and of loveC
-
Fast by the centre of yon various wildD
Where spreading oaks embower a Gothic faneE
Kendria's arts a brother's youth beguiledD
There nature urged her tenderest pleas in vainE
-
Soft o'er his birth and o'er his infant hoursF
The ambitious maid could every care employG
Then with assiduous fondness cropt the flowersF
To deck the cradle of the princely boyG
-
But soon the bosom's pleasing calm is flownH
Love fires her breast the sultry passions riseI
A favour'd lover seeks the Mercian throneH
And views her Kenelm with a rival's eyesI
-
How kind were Fortune ah how just were FateJ
Would Fate or Fortune Mercia's heir removeK
How sweet to revel on the couch of stateJ
To crown at once her lover and her loveC
-
See garnish'd for the chase the fraudful maidL
To these lone hills direct his devious wayM
The youth all prone the sister guide obey'dL
Ill fated youth himself the destined preyM
-
But now nor shaggy hill nor pathless plainE
Forms the lone refuge of the sylvan gameN
Since Lyttleton has crown'd the sweet domainE
With softer pleasures and with fairer fameN
-
Where the rough bowman urged his headlong steedO
Immortal bards a polish'd race retireP
And where hoarse scream'd the strepent horn succeedO
The melting graces of no vulgar lyreP
-
See Thomson loitering near some limpid wellQ
For Britain's friend the verdant wreath prepareR
Or studious of revolving seasons tellQ
How peerless Lucia made all seasons fairR
-
See from civic garlands flyS
And in those groves indulge his tuneful veinE
Or from yon summit with a guardian's eyeS
Observe how Freedom's hand attires the plainE
-
Here Pope ah never must that towering mindT
To his loved haunts or dearer friend returnU
What art what friendships oh what fame resign'dT
In yonder glade I trace his mournful urnU
-
Where is the breast can rage or hate retainE
And these glad streams and smiling lawns beholdV
Where is the breast can hear the woodland strainE
And think fair Freedom well exchanged for goldV
-
Through these soft shades delighted let me strayM
While o'er my head forgotten suns descendW
Through these dear valleys bend my casual wayM
Till setting life a total shade extendW
-
Here far from courts and void of pompous caresX
I'll muse how much I owe mine humbler fateJ
Or shrink to find how much Ambition daresX
To shine in anguish and to grieve in stateJ
-
Canst thou O Sun that spotless throne discloseY
Where her bold arm has left no sanguine stainE
Where show me where the lineal sceptre glowsY
Pure as the simple crook that rules the plainE
-
Tremendous pomp where hate distrust and fearZ
In kindred bosoms solve the social tieS
There not the parent's smile is half sincereZ
Nor void of art the consort's melting eyeS
-
There with the friendly wish the kindly flameN
No face is brighten'd and no bosoms beatA2
Youth manhood age avow one sordid aimN
And even the beardless lip essays deceitA2
-
There coward Rumours walk their murderous roundA
The glance that more than rural blame instilsY
Whispers that tinged with friendship doubly woundA
Pity that injures and concern that killsY
-
There anger whets but love can ne'er engageB2
Caressing brothers part but to revileC2
There all men smile and Prudence warns the wiseY
To dread the fatal stroke of all that smileC2
-
There all are rivals sister son and sireD2
With horrid purpose hug destructive armsY
There soft eyed maids in murderous plots conspireD2
And scorn the gentler mischief of their charmsY
-
Let servile minds one endless watch endureE2
Day night nor hour their anxious guard resignF2
But lay me Fate on flowery banks secureE2
Though my whole soul be like my limbs supineF2
-
Yes may my tongue disdain a vassal's careR
My lyre resound no prostituted layM
More warm to merit more elate to wearR
The cap of Freedom than the crown of bayM
-
Soothed by the murmurs of my pebbled floodG2
I wish it not o'er golden sands to flowH2
Cheer'd by the verdure of my spiral woodI2
I scorn the quarry where no shrub can growH2
-
No midnight pangs the shepherd's peace pursueY
His tongue his hand attempts no secret woundA
He sings his Delia and if she be trueY
His love at once and his ambition's crown'dA
