Elegy Iv. Ophilia's Urn. To Mr. Graves Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF DADA GHGH IAI JKJK LMLM NJNJ OPOP

Through the dim veil of evening's dusky shadeA
Near some lone fane or yew's funereal greenB
What dreary forms has magic Fear survey'dA
What shrouded spectres Superstition seenB
-
But you secure shall pour your sad complaintC
Nor dread the meagre phantom's wan arrayD
What none but Fear's officious hand can paintC
What none but Superstition's eye surveyD
-
The glimmering twilight and the doubtful dawnE
Shall see your step to these sad scenes returnF
Constant as crystal dews impearl the lawnE
Shall Strephon's tear bedew Ophelia's urnF
-
Sure nought unhallow'd shall presume to strayD
Where sleep the relics of that virtuous maidA
Nor aught unlovely bend its devious wayD
Where soft Ophelia's dear remains are laidA
-
Haply thy Muse as with unceasing sighsG
She keeps late vigils on her urn reclinedH
May see light groups of pleasing visions riseG
And phantoms glide but of celestial kindH
-
Then Fame her clarion pendent at her sideI
Shall seek forgiveness of Ophelia's shadeA
'Why has such worth without distinction diedI
Why like the desert's lily bloom'd to fade '-
-
Then young Simplicity averse to feignJ
Shall unmolested breathe her softest sighK
And Candour with unwonted warmth complainJ
And Innocence indulge a wailful cryK
-
Then Elegance with coy judicious handL
Shall cull fresh flowerets for Ophelia's tombM
And Beauty chide the Fate's severe commandL
That show'd the frailty of so fair a bloomM
-
And Fancy then with wild ungovern'd woeN
Shall her loved pupil's native taste explainJ
For mournful sable all her hues foregoN
And ask sweet solace of the Muse in vainJ
-
Ah gentle Forms expect no fond reliefO
Too much the sacred Nine their loss deploreP
Well may ye grieve nor find an end of griefO
Your best your brightest favourite is no moreP
