Anacreontic Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH AIAI JCJC KLKL MNMN

'Twas in a cool Aonian gladeA
The wanton Cupid spent with toilB
Had sought refreshment from the shadeA
And stretch'd him on the mossy soilB
-
A vagrant Muse drew nigh and foundC
The subtle traitor fast asleepD
And is it thine to snore profoundC
She said yet leave the world to weepD
-
But hush from this auspicious hourE
The world I ween may rest in peaceF
And robb'd of darts and stript of powerE
Thy peevish petulance decreaseF
-
Sleep on poor Child whilst I withdrawG
And this thy vile artillery hideH
When the Castalian fount she sawG
And plunged his arrows in the tideH
-
That magic fount ill judging maidA
Shall cause you soon to curse the dayI
You dared the shafts of Love invadeA
And gave his arms redoubled swayI
-
For in a stream so wondrous clearJ
When angry Cupid searches roundC
Will not the radiant points appearJ
Will not the furtive spoils be foundC
-
Too soon they were and every dartK
Dipt in the Muse's mystic springL
Acquired new force to wound the heartK
And taught at once to love and singL
-
Then farewell ye Pierian quireM
For who will now your altars throngN
From Love we learn to swell the lyreM
And Echo asks no sweeter songN
