Anacreontic Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH AIAI JCJC KLKL MNMN'Twas in a cool Aonian glade | A |
The wanton Cupid spent with toil | B |
Had sought refreshment from the shade | A |
And stretch'd him on the mossy soil | B |
- | |
A vagrant Muse drew nigh and found | C |
The subtle traitor fast asleep | D |
And is it thine to snore profound | C |
She said yet leave the world to weep | D |
- | |
But hush from this auspicious hour | E |
The world I ween may rest in peace | F |
And robb'd of darts and stript of power | E |
Thy peevish petulance decrease | F |
- | |
Sleep on poor Child whilst I withdraw | G |
And this thy vile artillery hide | H |
When the Castalian fount she saw | G |
And plunged his arrows in the tide | H |
- | |
That magic fount ill judging maid | A |
Shall cause you soon to curse the day | I |
You dared the shafts of Love invade | A |
And gave his arms redoubled sway | I |
- | |
For in a stream so wondrous clear | J |
When angry Cupid searches round | C |
Will not the radiant points appear | J |
Will not the furtive spoils be found | C |
- | |
Too soon they were and every dart | K |
Dipt in the Muse's mystic spring | L |
Acquired new force to wound the heart | K |
And taught at once to love and sing | L |
- | |
Then farewell ye Pierian quire | M |
For who will now your altars throng | N |
From Love we learn to swell the lyre | M |
And Echo asks no sweeter song | N |
