When I was a lad I served a termA
As office boy to an Attorney's firmA
I cleaned the windows and I swept the floorB
And I polished up the handle of the big front doorB
I polished up that handle so successfulleeC
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen's NaveeD
-
As office boy I made such a markE
That they gave me the post of a junior clerkF
I served the writs with a smile so blandG
And I copied all the letters in a big round handG
I copied all the letters in a hand so freeH
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen's NaveeD
-
In serving writs I made such a nameI
That an articled clerk I soon becameI
I wore clean collars and a brand new suitJ
For the Pass Examination at the InstituteJ
And that Pass Examination did so well for meH
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen's NaveeD
-
Of legal knowledge I acquired such a gripK
That they took me into the partnershipK
And that junior partnership I weenL
Was the only ship that I ever had seenL
But that kind of ship so suited meH
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen's NaveeD
-
I grew so rich that I was sentM
By a pocket borough into ParliamentN
I always voted at my Party's callC
And I never thought of thinking for myself at allC
I thought so little they rewarded meH
By making me the Ruler of the Queen's NaveeD
-
Now landsmen all whoever you may beH
If you want to rise to the top of the treeH
If your soul isn't fettered to an office stoolC
Be careful to be guided by this golden ruleC
Stick close to your desks and NEVER GO TO SEAH
And you all may be Rulers of the Queen's NaveeD
