It was a Bishop boldA
And London was his seeB
He was short and stout and round aboutC
And zealous as could beB
-
It also was a JewD
Who drove a Putney 'busB
For flesh of swine however fineE
He did not care a cussB
-
His name was HASH BAZ BENF
And JEDEDIAH tooD
And SOLOMON and ZABULONF
This 'bus directing JewD
-
The Bishop said said heB
quot I'll see what I can doD
To Christianise and make you wiseB
You poor benighted Jew quotD
-
So every blessed dayD
That 'bus he rode outsideD
From Fulham town both up and downF
And loudly thus he criedD
-
quot His name is HASH BAZ BENF
And JEDEDIAH tooD
And SOLOMON and ZABULONF
This 'bus directing Jew quotD
-
At first the 'busman smiledD
And rather liked the funF
He merely smiled that Hebrew childD
And said quot Eccentric one quotD
-
And gay young dogs would waitD
To see the 'bus go byG
These gay young dogs in striking togsB
To hear the Bishop cryG
-
quot Observe his grisly beardD
His race it clearly showsB
He sticks no fork in ham or porkH
Observe my friends his noseB
-
quot His name is HASH BAZ BENF
And JEDEDIAH tooD
And SOLOMON and ZABULONF
This 'bus directing Jew quotD
-
But though at first amusedD
Yet after seven yearsB
This Hebrew child got rather riledD
And melted into tearsB
-
He really almost fearedD
To leave his poor abodeD
His nose and name and beard becameI
A byword on that roadD
-
At length he swore an oathJ
The reason he would knowF
quot I'll call and see why ever heB
Does persecute me so quotD
-
The good old Bishop satD
On his ancestral chairK
The 'busman came sent up his nameI
And laid his grievance bareK
-
quot Benighted Jew quot he saidD
The good old Bishop didD
quot Be Christian you instead of JewD
Become a Christian kidD
-
quot I'll ne'er annoy you more quotD
quot Indeed quot replied the JewD
quot Shall I be freed quot quot You will indeed quotD
Then quot Done quot said he quot with you quotD
-
The organ which in manF
Between the eyebrows growsB
Fell from his face and in its placeB
He found a Christian noseB
-
His tangled Hebrew beardD
Which to his waist came downF
Was now a pair of whiskers fairK
His name ADOLPHUS BROWNF
-
He wedded in a yearL
That prelate's daughter JANEF
He's grown quite fair has auburn hairK
His wife is far from plainF
