When I went to the Bar as a very young manA
Said I to myself said IB
I'll work on a new and original planA
Said I to myself said IB
I'll never assume that a rogue or a thiefC
Is a gentleman worthy implicit beliefC
Because his attorney has sent me a briefC
Said I to myself said IB
-
I'll never throw dust in a juryman's eyesD
Said I to myself said IB
Or hoodwink a judge who is not over wiseD
Said I to myself said IB
Or assume that the witnesses summoned in forceE
In Exchequer Queen's Bench Common Pleas or DivorceE
Have perjured themselves as a matter of courseE
Said I to myself said IB
-
Ere I go into court I will read my brief throughF
Said I to myself said IB
And I'll never take work I'm unable to doF
Said I to myself said IB
My learned profession I'll never disgraceG
By taking a fee with a grin on my faceG
When I haven't been there to attend to the caseG
Said I to myself said IB
-
In other professions in which men engageH
Said I to myself said IB
The Army the Navy the Church and the StageH
Said I to myself said IB
Professional licence if carried too farI
Your chance of promotion will certainly marI
And I fancy the rule might apply to the BarI
Said I to myself said IB
