King Goodheart Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AAABCCCBDDDAEEEE FFFECCCEAAACAAAC CCCEAAAEEEEAAAAAThere lived a King as I've been told | A |
In the wonder working days of old | A |
When hearts were twice as good as gold | A |
And twenty times as mellow | B |
Good temper triumphed in his face | C |
And in his heart he found a place | C |
For all the erring human race | C |
And every wretched fellow | B |
When he had Rhenish wine to drink | D |
It made him very sad to think | D |
That some at junket or at jink | D |
Must be content with toddy | A |
He wished all men as rich as he | E |
And he was rich as rich could be | E |
So to the top of every tree | E |
Promoted everybody | E |
- | |
Ambassadors cropped up like hay | F |
Prime Ministers and such as they | F |
Grew like asparagus in May | F |
And Dukes were three a penny | E |
Lord Chancellors were cheap as sprats | C |
And Bishops in their shovel hats | C |
Were plentiful as tabby cats | C |
If possible too many | E |
On every side Field Marshals gleamed | A |
Small beer were Lords Lieutenants deemed | A |
With Admirals the ocean teemed | A |
All round his wide dominions | C |
And Party Leaders you might meet | A |
In twos and threes in every street | A |
Maintaining with no little heat | A |
Their various opinions | C |
- | |
That King although no one denies | C |
His heart was of abnormal size | C |
Yet he'd have acted otherwise | C |
If he had been acuter | E |
The end is easily foretold | A |
When every blessed thing you hold | A |
Is made of silver or of gold | A |
You long for simple pewter | E |
When you have nothing else to wear | E |
But cloth of gold and satins rare | E |
For cloth of gold you cease to care | E |
Up goes the price of shoddy | A |
In short whoever you may be | A |
To this conclusion you'll agree | A |
When every one is somebody | A |
Then no one's anybody | A |
