A tar but poorly prizedA
Long shambling and unsightlyB
Thrashed bullied and despisedA
Was wretched JOE GOLIGHTLYB
-
He bore a workhouse brandC
No Pa or Ma had claimed himD
The Beadle found him andE
The Board of Guardians named himD
-
P'r'aps some Princess's sonF
A beggar p'r'aps his motherG
HE rather thought the oneF
I rather think the otherG
-
He liked his ship at seaB
He loved the salt sea waterG
He worshipped junk and heB
Adored the First Lord's daughterG
-
The First Lord's daughter proudH
Snubbed Earls and Viscounts nightlyB
She sneered at Barts aloudH
And spurned poor Joe GolightlyB
-
Whene'er he sailed afarI
Upon a Channel cruise heB
Unpacked his light guitarI
And sang this ballad BooseyB
-
-
BalladJ
-
The moon is on the seaB
WillowK
The wind blows towards the leeB
WillowK
But though I sigh and sob and cryL
No Lady Jane for meB
WillowK
-
She says 'Twere folly quiteM
WillowK
For me to wed a wightM
WillowK
Whose lot is cast before the mastN
And possibly she's rightM
WillowK
-
-
His skipper CAPTAIN JOYCEB
He gave him many a ratingO
And almost lost his voiceB
From thus expostulatingO
-
Lay aft you lubber doP
What's come to that young man JOEK
Belay 'vast heaving youP
Do kindly stop that banjoK
-
I wish I do O lor'L
You'd shipped aboard a traderL
ARE you a sailor orL
A negro serenaderL
-
But still the stricken ladQ
Aloft or on his pillowK
Howled forth in accents sadQ
His aggravating WillowK
-
Stern love of duty badQ
Been JOYCE'S chiefest beautyB
Says he I love that ladQ
But duty damme dutyB
-
Twelve months' black hole I sayB
Where daylight never flashesB
And always twice a dayB
A good six dozen lashesB
-
But JOSEPH had a mateR
A sailor stout and lustyB
A man of low estateR
But singularly trustyB
-
Says he Cheer hup young JOEK
I'll tell you what I'm arterL
To that Fust Lord I'll goK
And ax him for his darterL
-
To that Fust Lord I'll goK
And say you love her dearlyB
And JOE said weeping lowK
I wish you would sincerelyB
-
That sailor to that LordS
Went soon as he had landedJ
And of his own accordS
An interview demandedJ
-
Says he with seaman's rollT
My Captain wot's a TartarL
Guv JOE twelve months' black holeT
For lovering your darterL
-
He loves MISS LADY JANEU
I own she is his bettersB
But if you'll jine them twainU
They'll free him from his fettersB
-
And if so be as howV
You'll let her come aboard shipW
I'll take her with me nowV
Get out remarked his LordshipW
-
That honest tar repairedX
To JOE upon the billowK
And told him how he'd faredX
JOE only whispered WillowK
-
And for that dreadful crimeY
Young sailors learn to shun itZ
He's working out his timeY
In six months he'll have done itZ
