The bravest names for fire and flamesA
And all that mortal durstB
Were GENERAL JOHN and PRIVATE JAMESA
Of the Sixty seventy firstB
-
GENERAL JOHN was a soldier triedC
A chief of warlike donsD
A haughty stride and a withering prideC
Were MAJOR GENERAL JOHN'SD
-
A sneer would play on his martial phizD
Superior birth to showE
Pish was a favourite word of hisD
And he often said Ho hoE
-
FULL PRIVATE JAMES described might beF
As a man of a mournful mindG
No characteristic trait had heF
Of any distinctive kindG
-
From the ranks one day cried PRIVATE JAMESD
Oh MAJOR GENERAL JOHNH
I've doubts of our respective namesD
My mournful mind uponH
-
A glimmering thought occurs to meF
Its source I can't unearthI
But I've a kind of a notion weF
Were cruelly changed at birthI
-
I've a strange idea that each other's namesD
We've each of us here got onH
Such things have been said PRIVATE JAMESD
They have sneered GENERAL JOHNH
-
My GENERAL JOHN I swear uponH
My oath I think 'tis soE
Pish proudly sneered his GENERAL JOHNH
And he also said Ho hoE
-
My GENERAL JOHN my GENERAL JOHNH
My GENERAL JOHN quoth heF
This aristocratical sneer uponH
Your face I blush to seeF
-
No truly great or generous coveJ
Deserving of them namesD
Would sneer at a fixed idea that's droveJ
In the mind of a PRIVATE JAMESD
-
Said GENERAL JOHN Upon your claimsD
No need your breath to wasteK
If this is a joke FULL PRIVATE JAMESD
It's a joke of doubtful tasteK
-
But being a man of doubtless worthI
If you feel certain quiteL
That we were probably changed at birthI
I'll venture to say you're rightL
-
So GENERAL JOHN as PRIVATE JAMESD
Fell in parade uponH
And PRIVATE JAMES by change of namesD
Was MAJOR GENERAL JOHNH
