Oh that my soul its gods could see	A
As years ago they seemed to me	A
When first I painted them	B
Invested with the circumstance	C
Of old conventional romance	C

With all the glow of chivalry	A

I found him in a beerhouse tap	I
Awaking from a gin born nap	I
With pipe and sloven dress	J
Amusing chums who fooled his bent	K
With muddy maudlin sentiment	L
And tipsy foolishness	M

The novelist whose painting pen	N
To legions of fictitious men	N
A real existence lends	O
Brain people whom we rarely fail	P
Whene'er we hear their names to hail	P
As old and welcome friends	O

I found in clumsy snuffy suit	Q
In seedy glove and blucher boot	Q
Uncomfortably big	R
Particularly commonplace	S
With vulgar coarse stockbroking face	S
And spectacles and wig	R

My favourite actor who at will	T
With mimic woe my eyes could fill	T
With unaccustomed brine	U
A being who appeared to me	A
Before I knew him well to be	A
A song incarnadine	U

I found a coarse unpleasant man	U
With speckled chin unhealthy wan	U
Of self importance full	V
Existing in an atmosphere	W
That reeked of gin and pipes and beer	W
Conceited fractious dull	X

Triumphant over all	Z
I found weak palsied bloated blear	W
His province seemed to be to leer	W
At bonnets in Pall Mall	Z
