Oh big was the bosom of brave ALUM BEYA
And also the region that under it layA
In safety and peril remarkably coolB
And he dwelt on the banks of the river StamboulB
-
Each morning he went to his garden to cullB
A bunch of zenana or sprig of bul bulB
And offered the bouquet in exquisite bloomC
To BACKSHEESH the daughter of RAHAT LAKOUMC
-
No maiden like BACKSHEESH could tastily cookD
A kettle of kismet or joint of tchiboukD
As ALUM brave fellow sat pensively byE
With a bright sympathetic ka bob in his eyeE
-
Stern duty compelled him to leave her one dayA
A ship's supercargo was brave ALUM BEYA
To pretty young BACKSHEESH he made a salaamC
And sailed to the isle of SeringapatamC
-
O ALUM said she think again ere you goD
Hareems may arise and Moguls they may blowD
You may strike on a fez or be drowned which is wussF
But ALUM embraced her and spoke to her thusF
-
Cease weeping fair BACKSHEESH I willingly swearG
Cork jackets and trousers I always will wearG
And I also throw in a large number of oathsH
That I never no NEVER will take off my clothesH
-
-
-
They left Madagascar away on their rightI
And made Clapham Common the following nightI
Then lay on their oars for a fortnight or twoJ
Becalmed in the ocean of HonololuD
-
One day ALUM saw with alarm in his breastK
A cloud on the nor sow sow nor sow nor westK
The wind it arose and the crew gave a screamC
For they knew it they knew it the dreaded HareemC
-
The mast it went over and so did the sailsL
Brave ALUM threw over his casks and his balesL
The billows arose as the weather grew thickD
And all except ALUM were terribly sickD
-
The crew were but three but they holloa'd for nineM
They howled and they blubbered with wail and with whineM
The skipper he fainted away in the foreN
For he hadn't the heart for to skip any moreN
-
Ho coward said ALUM with heart of a childO
Thou son of a party whose grave is defiledO
Is ALUM in terror is ALUM afeardO
Ho ho If you had one I'd laugh at your beardO
-
His eyeball it gleamed like a furnace of cokeD
He boldly inflated his clothes as he spokeD
He daringly felt for the corks on his chestO
And he recklessly tightened the belt at his breastO
-
For he knew the brave ALUM that happen what mightO
With belts and cork jacketing HE was all rightO
Though others might sink he was certain to swimC
No Hareem whatever had terrors for himC
-
They begged him to spare from his personal storeN
A single cork garment they asked for no moreN
But he couldn't because of the number of oathsH
That he never no never would take off his clothesH
-
The billows dash o'er them and topple aroundO
They see they are pretty near sure to be drownedO
A terrible wave o'er the quarter deck breaksP
And the vessel it sinks in a couple of shakesP
-
The dreadful Hareem though it knows how to blowD
Expends all its strength in a minute or soD
When the vessel had foundered as I have detailedO
The tempest subsided and quiet prevailedO
-
One seized on a cork with a yelling Ha haQ
Its bottle had 'prisoned a pint of PachaR
Another a toothpick another a trayA
Alas it is useless said brave ALUM BEYA
-
To holloa and kick is a very bad planS
Get it over my tulips as soon as you canS
You'd better lay hold of a good lump of leadO
And cling to it tightly until you are deadO
-
Just raise your hands over your pretty heads soD
Right down to the bottom you're certain to goD
Ta ta I'm afraid we shall not meet againT
For the truly courageous are truly humaneU
-
Brave ALUM was picked up the very next dayA
A man o' war sighted him smoking awayA
With hunger and cold he was ready to dropV
So they sent him below and they gave him a chopV
-
O reader or readress whichever you beW
You weep for the crew who have sunk in the seaW
O reader or readress read farther and dryE
The bright sympathetic ka bob in your eyeE
-
That ship had a grapple with three iron spikesX
It's lowered and ha on a something it strikesX
They haul it aboard with a British heave hoD
And what it has fished the drawing will showD
-
There was WILSON and PARKER and TOMLINSON tooO
The first was the captain the others the crewO
As lively and spry as a Malabar apeY
Quite pleased and surprised at their happy escapeY
-
And ALUM brave fellow who stood in the foreN
And never expected to look on them moreN
Was really delighted to see them againT
For the truly courageous are truly humaneU
