A Death Song Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC ADADCC BEBECC BFBFCC

What cometh here from west to east awendingA
And who are these the marchers stern and slowB
We bear the message that the rich are sendingA
Aback to those who bade them wake and knowB
Not one not one nor thousands must they slayC
But one and all if they would dusk the dayC
-
We asked them for a life of toilsome earningA
They bade us bide their leisure for our breadD
We craved to speak to tell our woeful learningA
We come back speechless bearing back our deadD
Not one not one nor thousands must they slayC
But one and all if they would dusk the dayC
-
They will not learn they have no ears to hearkenB
They turn their faces from the eyes of fateE
Their gay lit halls shut out the skies that darkenB
But lo this dead man knocking at the gateE
Not one not one nor thousands must they slayC
But one and all if they would dusk the dayC
-
Here lies the sign that we shall break our prisonB
Amidst the storm he won a prisoner's restF
But in the cloudy dawn the sun arisenB
Brings us our day of work to win the bestF
Not one not one nor thousands must they slayC
But one and all if they would dusk the dayC
