'Listen my child ' said the old pineA
tree to the little one nestling nearB
'For the storm clouds troop together to nightC
and the wind of the north I hearD
And perchance there may come some echo ofE
the music of long agoF
The music that rang when the White HostG
sang marching across the snow 'H
-
'Up and away Saint George up thro' theI
mountain gorgeJ
Over the plain where the tempest blows andK
the great white flakes are flyingL
Down the long narrow glen faster my merryM
menN
Follow the trail tho' shy moon hides andK
deeply the drifts are lying '-
-
'Ah mother ' the little pine tree repliedO
'you are dreaming again to nightC
Of ghostly visions and phantom forms that forP
ever mock your sightC
'Tis true moan of the winter wind comesQ
to my list'ning earD
But the White Host marching I cannot seeM
and their music I cannot hear '-
-
'When the northern skies were all aflameR
where the trembling banners swungS
When up in the vaulted heavens the moon ofE
the Snow Shoe hungS
When the hurricane swept the hillside and theI
crested drifts ran highT
Those were the nights ' said the old pine treeM
'the great White Host marched by '-
-
And the storm grew fiercer fiercer and theI
snow went hissing pastU
But the little pine tree still listened till sheM
heard above the blastU
The music her mother loved to hear in theI
nights of the long agoF
And saw in the forest the white clad HostG
marching across the snowF
-
And loud they sang as they tramped along ofE
the glorious bygone daysV
Whan valley and hill re echeoed the snowF
shoer's hymn of praiseV
Till the shy moon gazed down smiling and theI
north wind pause to hearD
And the old pine tree felt young again as theI
little one nestling nearB
-
'Up and away Saint George up thro' theI
mountain gorgeJ
Over the plain where the tempest blows andK
the great white flakes are flyingL
Down the long narrow glen faster my merryM
menN
Follow the trail tho' the shy moon hides andK
deeply the drifts are lying '-
