WRITTEN TO COMMEMORATE THE ANNIVERA
SARY OF MY BROTHER TOM 'S BIRTHDAYB
-
O memory take my hand to dayB
And lead me thro' the darkened bridgeC
Washed by the wild Atlantic sprayB
And spanning many a wind swept ridgeC
Of sorrow grief of love and joyD
Of youthful hopes and manly fearsE
O let me cross the bridge of yearsE
And see myself again a boyD
-
The shadows pass I see the lightF
O morning light how clear and strongG
My native skies are smiling brightF
No more I grope my way alongG
It comes the murmur of the tideH
Upon my ear I hear the cryA
Of wandering sea birds as they flyA
In trooping squadrons far and nearA
-
The breeze that blows o'er MullaghmoreA
I feel against my boyish cheekI
The white walled huts that strew the shoreA
From Castlegal to old BelleekI
The fisher folk of DonegalA
Kindly of heart and strong of armJ
Who plough the ocean's treacherous farmJ
How plainly I behold them allA
-
The thrush's song the blackbird's noteK
The wren within the hawthorn hedgeL
The robin 's swelling vibrant throatK
The leveret crouching in the sedgeL
In those dear days ah what was schoolA
When Nature made our pulses thrillA
The lessons we remember stillA
Were learnt at Nature's own footstoolA
-
'The hounds are out the beagles chaseM
Along the slopes of Tawley 's plain '-
I rise and follow in the raceM
Till fox or hare or both are slainN
With heart ablaze I loose the reinsO
Of all my childish fierce desireA
My faith 't is Ireland plants the fireA
And iron in her children's veinsO
-
The mountain linnet whistles sweetP
Among the gorse of summer timeQ
As up the hill with eager feetP
The sun of morning sees me climbQ
Until at last I sink to restR
Where heatherbells swing to the tuneS
That Benbo breezes softly croonS
A tired child on the mother's breastR
-
And now in wisdom's riper yearsE
Ah wisdom what a price we payB
Of sorrow grief of smiles and tearsT
Before we reach that wiser dayB
We meet to greet in joy and mirthU
The white haired parent of us allA
Our childhood's memories to recallA
And bless the land that gave us birthU
